lxde not starting anymore after latest update

Things I noticed is that python2-dbus is gone, so goodbye wicd.

At boot, now it stays grey, lxdm does not start.

From another console, if I launch startlxde from user I get this error:

startlxde dbus-update-activation-environment error unable to connect to d-bus failed to connect to socket /run/user/0/bus permission denied

It seems that dbus prevents lxde from starting. Maybe auth issues?

Can somebody help? It is not clear to me how the apps are nested and how to debug.

I didn't have a backup; I know, I know. Short of that I did the following:

    # back up mirrorlist first
    cp /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist.old
 
    # point mirrorlist to the archive specifying date to rollback to e.g. to return to February 1st:
    echo 'Server=https://archive.archlinux.org/repos/2021/02/01/$repo/os/$arch' > /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
 
    # do a full system upgrade (double 'y' refreshes your package database, double 'u' allows pacman to downgrade packages)
    pacman -Syyuu

After downgrading, my desktop loads again. I will try an upgrade in a few days.

Of course, make sure you move your backup mirrorlist back when you're done.

Please post the complete system journal of a failing boot.
The typical current cause for generic failure to lauch GUI is that the display server is triggered before the GPU is initialized, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … _KMS_start

I don't think downgrading is the best solution.

Login is stuck on the line that says: "Wait for Plymouth Boot Screen to Quit". A couple of other lines follow, but are not relevant.

I can switch to another console and log in. startx works and opens openbox. There, I can type startlxde, and it open lxde in a window.

lxdm seems running (seen with ps), but graphical login does not appear.

If I try startlxde on console, it gives "cannto find display". Even if I set the display, it won't work.

Being limited to console, I have no way to post system journal or anything.

Tried to regenerate kernel. I see that for a moment a black screen appeared, probably after it launched lxdm, then it reverted back to startup messages. If I check what is running, I see nothing wrong. With dmesg, no errors.

Installed gdm and gnome, and it works. It seems an issue with lxdm, which shows as active, but nothing is displayed.

That's it. With systemctl status it shows active. But it does not show.

Switching back and forth between consoles, instead of the startup lines, I see just all black, like the x server is running, but nothing is into it.

I also tried with lightdm, and it does not start either (fails directly).

I wonder if it has something to do with my hardware: AMD Ryzen, Nvidia card. I read that there are many complaints about graphics.

I tried xdm and it works. It can launch lxde. It is definitely a lxdm issue.

I had to downgrade glib2 (to 2.68.0-2) to make lxdm work again (gdm worked fine). Next some applications (bluemoon, ex-falso) were having issues after latest update, all related to gobject-introspection-runtime and/or python-gobject, you might take a look at downgrading these packages as well.

Despite going past lxdm, I find many things not working: lxsession-default-apps crashes. No sound cards recognized in pulseaudio, despite alsa sees them. Total mess.

I am downgrading now, but it seems to me that it will be a mess. I wonder if recompiling lxde (and not just that) might fix things.

I can confirm downgrade solved the issue, despite I don't understand why now pulseaudio picks up each card twice.

Possibly related to https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=264780 . It is very likely a bug in glib2. Upstream has been informed.
