[SOLVED] Trying to set refresh rate in xorg config, missing modeline..

I have a 2560x1440 monitor capable of 4 refresh rates (60hz, 120hz, 144hz, 165hz) but I'm having trouble setting 144hz as the default for xorg.

xrandr indicates 60hz is the default in the following output:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 2560 x 1440, maximum 16384 x 16384
DisplayPort-0 connected primary 2560x1440+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 596mm x 335mm
   2560x1440 59.94*+ 164.83 143.86 119.88
   1920x1200 59.94
   1920x1080 143.85 120.00 119.88 60.00 60.00 59.94
   1600x1200 59.94
   1680x1050 59.95
   1280x1024 75.02 60.02
   1440x900 59.89
   1280x800 59.94
   1280x720 120.00 119.88 60.00 59.94
   1024x768 75.03 70.07 60.00
   800x600 72.19 75.00 60.32 56.25
   720x576 50.00
   720x480 60.00 59.94
   640x480 75.00 72.81 60.00 59.94
DisplayPort-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DisplayPort-2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-A-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

I can successfully switch to 144hz using:

xrandr --output DisplayPort-0 --mode 2560x1440 --rate 144

However, I would like to set it as default in xorg. My understanding is I need to grab the modeline from the xorg logs, which look like the following:

As you can see there are only 3 lines for my desired resolution (2560x1440). And for some reason it is not listing the refresh rate; all of the entries just have 0.0 after the resolution. Nevertheless, I tried all 3 in my xorg config located at /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf:

Section "Monitor"
	Identifier "DisplayPort-0"
	#Modeline "2560x1440_1" 248.14 2560 2608 2640 2720 1440 1494 1502 1522 +hsync +vsync
	#Modeline "2560x1440_2" 644.04 2560 2568 2600 2640 1440 1466 1474 1480 +hsync +vsync
	Modeline "2560x1440_3" 497.26 2560 2608 2640 2720 1440 1503 1511 1525 +hsync +vsync
	Option "PreferredMode" "2560x1440_3"
EndSection

As you can see, I've simply commented out the modelines, trying them one at a time. This does indeed work as shown by xrandr:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 2560 x 1440, maximum 16384 x 16384
DisplayPort-0 connected primary 2560x1440+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 596mm x 335mm
   2560x1440_3 119.88*+

   1280x1024 75.02 60.02
   1440x900 59.89
   1280x800 59.94
   1280x720 120.00 119.88 60.00 59.94
   1024x768 75.03 70.07 60.00
   800x600 72.19 75.00 60.32 56.25
   720x576 50.00
   720x480 60.00 59.94
   640x480 75.00 72.81 60.00 59.94
DisplayPort-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DisplayPort-2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-A-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

Here is my problem: these 3 modelines refer to 60hz, 120hz, and 165hz. There is no modeline for 144hz, which happens to be the refresh rate I want.

Why are there only 3 modelines for 2560x1440 when there are 4 refresh rates?
Also, why do the modelines all have 0.0 after the resolution rather than the refresh rate?

Re: [SOLVED] Trying to set refresh rate in xorg config, missing modeline..

% cvt12 2560 1440 143.86
# 2560x1440 @ 143.860 Hz (CVT) field rate 143.827 Hz; hsync: 225.377 kHz; pclk: 807.75 MHz
Modeline "2560x1440_143.86" 807.75 2560 2792 3072 3584 1440 1443 1448 1567 -hsync +vsync

% cvt12 2560 1440 143.86 -b
# 2560x1440 @ 143.860 Hz Reduced Blank (CVT) field rate 143.860 Hz; hsync: 221.976 kHz; pclk: 586.02 MHz
Modeline "2560x1440_143.86_rb2" 586.02 2560 2568 2600 2640 1440 1529 1537 1543 +hsync -vsync

Edit: try the second one (compare the pclk's w/ the existing ones…)

I *guess* the x0.0 is just because the log code doesn't decode the frequency from the modeline and prints a generic placeholder.
Whether or not the 144Hz modeline is provided by the EDID or anything else can't be told from a log excerpt.

This one did it, thank you!
