Sound issue if External Sound Card -> Thunderbolt 3 dock station -> PC

Hello,
I have a strange issue. Setup is as follows. External sound card is connected to Docking station which is then connected to laptop.

If notebook is booted with dock attached, there are no issues. However if notebook is attached after it has been booted then sound crackling appers which sometimes worsens with time.
If external card is connected to a port directly on the computer then there are no issues either way.

Is there some sort of usb device driver priority which differs in described scenarios?
