No longer able to boot into efi arch usb.

I messed up the other day, and needed to use my arch usb today to fix grub.
Boot#1 got into usb, worked perfectly. tried to fix grub.
(grub was not fixed) boot#2 booted into the usb but it wasn't in efi mode anymore.  went into bios to try and figure out why usb booted in non-efi
boot#3 iso will no longer boot at all, getting errors as follows:

EFI stub: ERROR: exit_boot() failed!
EFI stub: ERROR: efi_main() failed!
Failed to execute Arch Linux install medium (x86_64, UEFI) (\arch\boot\x86_64\vmlinuz-linux): Buffer Too Small

I re-flashed my stick with an iso from today, using dd. Problem persists. This has happened before and it feels somewhat random.
If anyone could help I would appreciate it.

Well it's working now. No clue why.
