[SOLVED] Screen Flickering (5.12.1-arch1-1)

Hey everyone,

today i started my laptop (ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2014) and when the login screen appeared, it started flickering. Like it is refreshing every second.
Nevertheless, when i dock it i have a second monitor and i can use it like normal. It is only flickering on the laptop screen.
Before today, it ran perfectly fine with no issues whatsoever.

Does anyone have some tips?
Since i am a noobie, i don't know what you need to see so just tell me.

I'm running

5.12.1-arch1-1

Re: [SOLVED] Screen Flickering (5.12.1-arch1-1)

Same issue here. X1 Carbon 3rd gen. Per OP, the screen flickers once per second. This is the case both in console and X.

Freshly upgraded today, I stay close to bleeding edge (do an upgrade at least once a week).

ETA: below is the log from my latest run of pacman, with the list of packages updated - hopefully that helps identify where the issue is!

ETA2: Rolling back to the previous version of linux (5.11.16.arch1-1) resolved the issue for me. In my case, I was able to download downgrader and told it to restore my previous kernel version.

Re: [SOLVED] Screen Flickering (5.12.1-arch1-1)

Same here. X1 Carbon 3rd generation.

$ uname -a
Linux host 5.12.1-arch1-1 #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun, 02 May 2021 12:43:58 +0000 x86_64 GNU/Linux

with

Intel® Core™ i7-5500U CPU @ 2.40GHz × 4

and

Mesa Intel® HD Graphics 5500 (BDW GT2)

I'd like not to revert to a previous kernel. Is there any other solution? Does anyone know what's causing this?

Reverting with to a previous kernel fixes the problem temporarily

pacman -U 5.11.16.arch1-1.pkg.tar.zst

ETA2: Rolling back to the previous version of linux (5.11.16.arch1-1) resolved the issue for me. In my case, I was able to download downgrader and told it to restore my previous kernel version.

Just fixed it by doing it manually. I downloaded the older kernel: "linux-5.11.arch2-1" and "linux-headers-5.11.arch2-1" from the archive and then "pacman -u" both of them.
Thanks for the idea to just downgrade smile

Re: [SOLVED] Screen Flickering (5.12.1-arch1-1)

@jared - the "fix" isn't really a fix, it's a deferral of the issue while the problem is resolved. I just tried the latest published kernel (5.12.2.arch1) and the issue persists.

Re: [SOLVED] Screen Flickering (5.12.1-arch1-1)

Same issue on my side with Lenovo X1 Carbon (3rd gen) but works fine on a different laptop: Lenovo T400.
I'm using LTS kernel as a failover for now (works totally fine).

RCA

I tried adding/removing different i915 module options (both at kernel start and in modprobe.d) without any success. The screen flickers on command line as well (during boot) so it's for sure not related to X11/Wayland. I haven't tried with external monitor yet.

Failover

P.S. I do recommend you to install and have always 2 kernels (+LTS) so you can switch it via boot loader.
