upgrading intel management engine through fwupmgr still going ...

About 2 hours ago I run a system update via fwupmgr. I do this every other month or so to make sure my BIOS and thunderbolt have the latest firmware. Oftentimes there is nothing to update. When there is an update it usually takes 15-20 min to run its course.Today however there was a security update for the intel management engine. I went ahead and started the update. After more than 1.5 hours is still going on. Is this normal ? I am not eager to force a reboot on the computer as this could basically ruin my system but at some point I need to make a decision. How long more do you guys think I should give it ? The current status of the laptop is as during any other update: blank screen, keyboard lit, and fans raving up and down. What kind of damage can I expect if I reboot manually before the update is done ?

Edit: just tried to poweroff the machine but the power button is not responding ... I am afraid I have to unplug and let it run out of battery while "performing the upgrade" ...
