Hi all,
This seems to be a quite common issue, but all other posts I have been looking were having NVIDIA / bumblebee drivers running. I am running only intel driver, as my only GPU was the Intel one.
Computer: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2018
Issue: Sometimes when I plug in HDMI, the system does not recognize, but sometimes it works pretty well.

Wonky HDMI handshake fails because HDMI is a shit protocol that was patched into uselessnes because "But people will steal our precious transformer movies!!!"
There's a very fragile timing component to this and the usual suspect is the cable, esp. if there're any converters/adapters or docks involved.
You also might want to try to re-plug it on the other end.
Use Displayport if you can…
