Desktop speakers identified through port 'Headphones ()'

My speakers are plugged into the Line Out physical port, however, sounds only plays through them when pavucontrol has the output port set to Headphones(). When I plug my actual headphones into the front headphone jack sound also plays through them. With speakers plugged in, and headphones unplugged, pavucontrol lists Headphones (unplugged), Line Out (plugged in), and Speakers (unavailable), but the sound will only play when I set the output to Headphones (unplugged). Is this the intended behaviour? Since I can only select one output it seems if I want to have sound playing simultaneously through headphones and speakers (physical devices) they would need to be mapped to the same port; but is it possible to have the physical headphones identified with just Headphones and likewise with the speakers? I would rather this be the default, and have  a 'workaround' to get sound playing from both devices simultaneously. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
