First post, please bear with me if i make any mistakes:
A few of my laptop keys stopped working, so i remapped them to various keys on the numpad using xkeycaps, and for a while it was fine. Until recently (after using xkeycaps to create a custom xmodmap file to run at login, as opposed to remapping the keys every time), where my entire DE would take very noticeably longer to load, and would drop frames until I restarted. Changing compositors would make it hang indefinitely. I tried deleting the xmodmap file and using my original method of just remapping the keys on every login, but now for some reason running xkeycaps yielded the same results.
The auto generated .Xmodmap (remapped space to numpad 0, tab to numpad 7, 'm' to numpad 2, 'v' to numpad 1, and 's' to numpad 3):

How when and where exactly do you load the .Xmodmap and does "top" indicate any high CPU load in any process?

1. I tried 3 different methods (restarted after each one):
-Using xkeycaps
-Running xmodmap in konsole (after running the command, the next line would always turn red, as if the command failed, but it'd work exactly as intended if you don't count the performance drop)

2. Ksysguard didn't show anything out of the ordinary, cpu usage at around a comfortable 6-10% (with firefox open), and only around 1-1.5 GB of ram, the top few being clamd, firefox, latte-dock, plasmashell, Kwin, and xorg

First, fix the modmap.

If it still causes this, try to
pkill kwin_x11; xmodmap /path/to/your/modmap; kwin_x11 & disownIe. restart kwin around the modmap. Do NOT fork the xmodmpap call.

The first solution didn't seem to work, but the second did, although I had to do each step separately, as (for some reason) using the command would cause kwin to spit out errors and not actually start.

So kwin doesn't like when the keymap is being changed below it…
I'm not sure whether plasma actually auto-loads .Xmodmap, but you yould use one of the SDDM scripts in /usr/share/sddm/scripts/ to set the key map before the session is actually started.
