Dual card Nvidia/AMD xrandr fails to detect all monitors

I have an HP Oment 15 (4800H/1660 Ti, specific model is 15-en0023dx) running Arch (5.12.5). I tend to take my laptop from place to place and either use it own its own or when connected to my TV at home. I've run Arch before on VMs so I assumed it would be as simple as connecting the HDMI cable and use xrandr to set the resolutions, but for some reason xrandr did not recognize my HDMI output.

After going through quite a few forum posts and trying to mess with xorg.conf myself, I managed to get it to where I can have it work only with my external displays (i.e. xrandr only detects HDMI-0, DP-0, DP-1...) or that it only detects the built in monitor (eDP-0, the initial state) but a signal is sent to the external monitor. I know this since whenever using only the external monitor or only the built in monitor using these configurations, the other monitor turns black and I can move my cursor to it.

I then suspected it was something with my WM (I am using HerbstLuftWM) since I didn't have the auto_detect_monitors option set, I tried setting it and restarting the xseesion and also forced a detect_monitors and tried to manually configure HLWM monitors but couldn't get it to work. I also tried using i3 to make sure it wasn't something specific to HLWM but it also didn't work, considering the output from xrandr it led me to believe something with my config was wrong and did allow for both providers to be loaded at the same time.

I did try to turn on xinerama which made both monitors function which seemed great at first but if I understand correctly, xinerama does not support polybar (it just crashed on startup) and as mentioned in the Arch wiki, it is the old way of doing things, so I would like to avoid it if possible.

Should probably also mention that running nvidia-settings works in either configuration, and it detects the HDMI monitor.

Your nvidia xorg module is not loading properly, post a xorg log. Are you sure you want distinct screens? Note that xorg screens do not refer to your physical screen layout but are a xorg concept. Your current configuration will have them distinct from each other and you'd have to knowingly and willingy define which applications run where by adding DISPLAY=:0.1 or :0.0 depending on what you want where, and xrandr's "vision" will change with that -- https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Multih … te_screens

That's not what you want in most "modern" cases, I suggest you remove that xorg configuration,  then post the resulting xorg.log and xrandr --listproviders output.

I removed the config file like you suggested, here are the logs you asked for:

For some reason after removing the config, looking for /var/log/Xorg.* did not yield any file, is there someother location it may have gone to. Anyway, now I'm back to the initial state where xrandr only lists the built in screen and the actual external screen does not receive any signal (unlike with the config file I had).

There's a setup where the Xorg server doesn't run as root and instead runs as your user. The log file then shows up somewhere under ~/.local/ in your home. I can find these files here when searching .local:

$ fd -i 'xorg.*log' .local
.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log
.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log.old
.local/share/xorg/Xorg.1.log
.local/share/xorg/Xorg.1.log.old
.local/share/xorg/Xorg.2.log

Those are old files here for me from years ago. I don't know if today's Xorg server still uses that exact location for the file.

I tried removing optimus-manager and install bumblebee instead, but got some errors, the socket under /var/run was not created even though the service was enabled and running (as indicated by systemctl status). I removed bumblebee and not xrandr actually detects both the AMD iGPU and the Nvidia dGPU. I tried running xrandr --auto but got and error:

Well that you were using optimus-manager/bumblebee initially would've been good to know. I'm not sure whether proper prime offloading with amd gpu's works yet, but the method described in, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA … phics_only should work (... switch the first MatchDriver=i915 to amdgpu) but that config would  lead to the nvidia driver being active "on-the go" as well.

Yep, finally managed to get this working with this post. Thanks for all the help! Hopefully someday it would be possible to run a proper AMD/Nvidia combination without having to set one or the other as the primary GPU or using something like optimus-manager.
