mutter 40.2 crashes gnome-shell

Not sure why others are not reporting this but since the update 2021-06-11 07:31:19 mutter 40.1-2 -> 40.2-1, gnome-shell crashes once every time I reboot or resume. Gnome-shell must have some silly logic that if it crashes then it immediately disables all extensions because I have to re-enable them every time although note the problem still occurs with all extensions disabled at boot etc. Only happens with my dock + 2 screens attached. If I downgrade mutter 40.2-1 -> 40.1-2 then everything works fine. Here is the core dump. I'll raise an Arch (or upstream?) bug if somebody else confirms this.

Re: mutter 40.2 crashes gnome-shell

I am using gnome 40.2.0 and facing similar issue , wayland is not showing sometimes in gdm login screen and system hangs a long time before displaying login screen , sometimes completely hangs without any response. i have nvidia 500 series gpu  and using default nouveau drivers causes this issue, if i use nvidia official driver it resolves this issue, also tried using sddm instead of gdm with nouveau driver and this solves the issue, so i think the issue is related to gdm.

Re: mutter 40.2 crashes gnome-shell

I kind of had the same issue. updated (pacman -Syu) my system yesterday and shut it down. Booted it up today and gdm did not show up anymore. A downgrade of mutter from 40.2-1 to 40.1-2 fixed that. To be sure, I ran pacman -Syu again (which updated the seemingly unrelated packages libpcap and tracker3 apart from mutter) and now it works again. So either the issue is fixed now or it is not easy to reproduce.

@bulletmark Does the issue still persist for you?

@bulletmark
I am facing exactly the same issue. Whenever I resume from RAM, gnome-shell dumps core and the system locks up.
Using a Vega 56 with amdgpu.

Re: mutter 40.2 crashes gnome-shell

@jf23, my issue has nothing to do with gdm and my system is completely up to date as I type this, including libpcap 1.10.1-1 and tracker3 3.1.2-1 which were updated earlier today with other packages.

None of this relates to my issue which is very simple. If I run mutter 40.2-1 then gnome-shell (1:40.2-1) crashes as I described. If I change nothing but roll back to the previous mutter 40.1-2 then gnome-shell is fine. I have switched back and forward many times to replicate this 100% consistently.

I raised an upstream bug. There are a few other similar mutter 40.2 bugs raised there today also.

Re: mutter 40.2 crashes gnome-shell

@bulletmark, @aja

I am having very similar issues.

recent system updates; I'm on gnome-shell 40.2

My machine cannot properly restore/resume a gnome-session -- if I'm logged in and then machine is suspended -- it cannot restart the login screen -- its just blank.  I can ssh to the machine and use systemct restart gdm.service but that's a pain.

I have also noticed this occurs whether I have logged in to a gnome session or not.

I don't have hibernate properly setup on my machine -- so I have disabled hibernate.  However, all of the above is happening because of resuming from 'suspend'; if I disable 'suspend' in my /etc/systemd/sleep.conf.d/sleep.conf then my machine does not suspend and of course I have no problems.

If someone can tell me how to do the coredump thing -- I can collect that information and upload.

Re: mutter 40.2 crashes gnome-shell

@icar, the bug was fixed 2 days ago in mutter 40.2.1-1 release.
