[SOLVED] new install MATE : lightdm autologin opens to blank screen

- formatted storage
- reinstalled using LTS, microcode, and without nvidia.

Laptop (Asus n501vw) with MATE desktop connected to an external monitor via HDMI. The monitor is set as primary display, the laptop screen set to 'off'. 

This setup works with the laptop screen enabled and the external monitor disconnected but will not work with the external display.

Autologin is enabled and opens the main screen with the MATE system standard desktop color but without a menu panel.

I can raise the menu panel through issuing

mate-panel

at the command line. I have terminal hotkeyed so I don't need the menu for that.

I have tried two lightdm session wrappers as below. No difference.

In the  journal  ,the only hint of mate-panel trouble that I see is

mate-session[491]: WARNING: Application 'mate-panel.desktop' failed to register before timeout
