sleep/suspend failure on asus vivo flip tp412ua [solved]

have not used this laptop for a few months and updated everything over the weekend. on current kernel 5.12, i get a hard lock on entering suspend. it had been working well before. i have tried some things taken from other threads but no success. i was hoping someone with this machine may have found a workaround or solution. also any tips about how to troubleshoot the failure would be helpful. thanks for any help and suggestions of what to try. the machine is intel based with i3-8130u processor, samsung nvme pcie 512 drive, intel 620 graphics and 12 gig ram. i have ruled out the nvme. that had been an issue but was corrected in series 5 kernels. i did try to use kernel option turning off sleep for drive and still have the issue. thanks for any help.

Your Shift key also seems to be broken.

Define Hard lock?  A kernel panic?
Have you tried downgrading your kernel?
Are there any hints in the journal?
I assume that "suspend" means suspend to disk.
Are you using a swap partition or a swap file?
Have you tried sleeping (suspend to RAM)?
What "things" have you taken from which "threads"?

Re: sleep/suspend failure on asus vivo flip tp412ua [solved]

Sorry.

I am trying to suspend/sleep to memory. i don't have hibernate setup, as my swap is probably too small. There are no hints in journal, I can see entries for putting wifi to sleep and then it goes to a shutdown. By hard lock, I mean the screen goes to black, the backlit keyboard stays lit. and anything i do gets no response (including pressing keys and up down on lid). to restart i have to hold power button for at least 10 seconds to reboot. The 'things' for threads were to determine that s2idle show 'deep' for sleep mode and that sleep is showing as available.

I was hoping someone with same computer may have found a workaround.

Re: sleep/suspend failure on asus vivo flip tp412ua [solved]

To provide further information. downgrading to 5.11 kernel series same issue. downgrading to 5.10 kernel series and the sleep/suspend to memory is working, so the problem began at kernel 5.11. from 5.11 series up, including 5.13 rc, the problem exists in the three states, freeze, mem and disk. the machine just locks and requires reset by holding power button for at least 10 seconds. the journal goes as far as wifi going to sleep and then next boot  up. On kernel 5.10 the three states work (after enabling hibernation to disk via swap). If there is anything anyone can recommend to try to avoid being stuck on this series kernel i'd be grateful. thanks.

Re: sleep/suspend failure on asus vivo flip tp412ua [solved]

I seem to have the same problem on 5.12.10 kernel on a desktop PC (HP 8100) which is using the radeon driver.

lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Cape Verde PRO [Radeon HD 7750/8740 / R7 250E]

Update > suspend/resume works as expected now after updating to 5.12.11

I am marking this solved as the most recent kernels on linux-ck-skylake and probably the stock kernels have fixed the issue, the machine now enters memory sleep modes w/out issue.
