Random crash in KDE

Hello,

I use Archlinux with KDE environment and sometimes my desktop crash in a very strange way. the screen freezes, the audio loops the last 1-2 seconds and the caps lock on my keyboard is blinking.

I don't know where it can come from and I don't know which log to search in. Do you have any hints about this ?

Thank you,

Louis

Re: Random crash in KDE

That's a kernel panic and not related to KDE.
And very hard to debug:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Genera … nel_panics
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kdump

Is this a recent regression or a constant thing?

With journalctl I get very strange messages but I don't understand what it is about. Here the last lines.

Ryzen CPU?

It happends sometimes, like once a week or two week. But it happened twice today while editing video in kdenlive.

My CPU is an 7-1165G7. Maybe it's a problem with graphic chipset that is pretty new.

Do you think I should consider switching to linux-lts ?

Re: Random crash in KDE

If you suspect the new-ish architecture to be the cause, LTS probably not help. You can try though.
Do you use the modesetting driver or xf86-video-intel?

You could also try to pass

i915.enable_dc=0 intel_idle.max_cstate=1

to the kernel (this will prevent some power saving measures, but they also tend to cause those freezes if the chip doesn't wake up)

Re: Random crash in KDE

I didn't install xf86-video-intel driver because it is not recommended in the wiki for recent gpu. I don't understand exactly what is modesetting but I think  I'm using this according to the wiki.

Thus my question ;-)

Try the kernel parameters then.

Re: Random crash in KDE

I was encountering a similar situation several weeks ago and after I configured kernel mode setting the problem has gone.

Thank you for your help.

Is there a big difference in terms of power consumption ?

Re: Random crash in KDE

There's no difference because w/o KMS you don't have a GUI environment to begin with.
I assume what he's talking about is a race condition that can be mitigated by https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … _KMS_start but will also just result in "booting into a black screen" - that's not what you're facing.

As for the parameters in #6 - if you're mostly using the system to have it wait for you do something then this will increase the power consuption of the CPU quite some, but the first step should be to pin the issue and if we figure that it's C-state related, we can go from there.

Re: Random crash in KDE

My kernel knowledge is a bit limited so I don't understand everything especially the KMS part but I changed the kernel parameters in grub config and I will see if I get the same problem.

My system crashed already 4 times today. Each time it happened when I was using obs, kdenlive and libre office impress at the same time.

Re: Random crash in KDE

If you only edited /etc/default/grub, make sure you didn't forget the grub-mkconfig run.

Edit

each time it happened when I was using obs, kdenlive and libre office impress at the same time.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Stress … ing_memory

Reasonable memtest86+ runs are measured in days, not minutes. At least run it eg. over night.

Re: Random crash in KDE

I updated grub with mkconfig.

When I have to do it I will try a memtest but I don't think it's a memory problems because I have a dual boot with windows and I didn't get the problem with windows. I don't use windows often but when I do it's with heavy softwares.

Re: Random crash in KDE

Ok so I also disabled fast startup. Do you think it has a link with my problem ? Even if it's not it always better to disable it because I couldn't write shared partitions.

Re: Random crash in KDE

A hibernating windows can cause all sorts of weird effects - there's no guarantee that it's related to the particular problem, but it should always be ruled out.
Also it will always cause *some* issues (like the conflictive FS access you experienced)

Re: Random crash in KDE

Hello,

Today I did the same things I did yesterday (video editing in kdenlive with obs and libre office open) and I didn't encounter any crash. Maybe it's soon to say the problem is fixed but it seems ways better for now.

Thank you !
