I last tried Arch shortly after 0.7.1 was released, it was nice, but as I only have this one computer, and I need it for school, I kept Ubuntu as my primary distro.
Shortly after I released tarballs of the new version of Deluge, someone mentioned they had added Arch builds into the AUR repo, which got me wanting to give Arch another go.
I've done a little bit of poking, and I can't seem to find any info on the .8 release. When is it expected, or does anyone know. I'm in no hurry, and decided I'd wait for the next major release to play around with Arch again.

0.8 comes when it is ready. There is no official date set yet.
As arch is a rolling release there is actually not much to wait for, as updating one of the old isos will give you the current state.
You may as well try one of tpowa's isos, which are located here. They are last updated 4th of november, so they are up2date.

I think, in this case, he is trying to minimize the download.
We should be releasing a new CD soon... real soon. I want to get pacman3 on the new CD 8)

real soon.
I've never really understood the ArchLinux developer's definition of "real soon"... could you elaborate... ![]()

No problem. I did not see my initial comment being out of line though ... it was based on previous experience with arch.

I didn't know pacman3 was definite in 0.8
That's awesome. What all is new in our pacman3? Are we finally getting a libified pacman?

Yeah, the biggest and main change in comparison to pacman2 is actually librarifation (is that a word?).

librarifation (is that a word?).
Nobody actually knows the correct word... I've seen:
libification
libafication
librarifation
libified
libidized
but firefox 2.0 says they're all incorrectly spelled. ![]()

I'm glad this thread turned out the way that it did. I found an example of how the current ISOs don't fit in every situation.
I needed more memory, so I upgraded to 4 GBs with a new motherboard. Since the new motherboard had the same chipset as my old one, and my processor was the same, I went ahead and simply tried to boot my new system with the old Arch configuration. It didn't work. Grub complained about not enough memory to load the kernel (error 28:...).
Originally I expected to rebuild my system, so I grabbed my Arch64 disc and rebuilt the base system. Rebooted after the base install and got the same error. (Turns out that Grub was broken for systems greater than 3 GBs.). I read that LILO would fix that, so I rebuilt. I installed using LILO, but when the system rebooted, I still had Grub (you read that right). Broken. I had no way to upgrade my system with this method because my system didn't run.
I went out and grabbed the FTP install ISO, and I got the system running. Without the FTP install, I had no way that I could figure out to get Arch running.
Thanks Devs for pushing so hard to get a new ISO set out and understanding why it's important.

I have a question: when 0.8 comes out, we will be able to "dist-upgrade" with pacman from 0.7.2 without problems, is this correct? I mean, upgrading from 0.7.2 to 0.8 will be possible, so when I login to my box, it will say "Arch Linux 0.8..." instead of 0.7.2?

yes, that's the point of the rolling release system. just pacman -Syu as usual and you get voodoo.

is there any chance to see the new version of python in 0.8? if not are there any plans about it?

New version of python and AL releases are not related, because of rolling release system. If new python will be in Current before 0.8 release, then it will be on CD, otherwise it will be possible to upgrade later.

What improvements does the "libified" version of pacman give? dont really understand the difference between not libified and libified.
