[GNOME / Mutter] Jerky, framedrops, unstable performance

Hi all,

I've been quite hesitant to post on this issue, because I've wanted to give Wayland a chance on the new NVIDIA 470 driver. I have since built a new system, reinstalled and tried both Wayland and X11. Performance is as bad on Wayland as it is on X11. Here are the symptoms:

glxgears rendering about 285 of the 300 frames in a 5.0 second period
fullscreen video is dropping frames constantly
vsynctester.com is just never stable, spikes all over the place

The situation becomes even worse when running refresh rates other than 60 Hz. On 50 Hz GNOME is really unbearable to use as it's stuttering and jerking along.

What is going on? None of this is any issue on eg. KDE, but I would really love to get GNOME to work.

Isn't it known that gnome wayland and proprietary Nvidia don't play well? I thought to even start a Wayland session with gdm you have to manually override defaults (see wiki).

The new 470 driver supports accelerated Xwayland, which indeed works, although jerky. To enable the use of Wayland on proprietary NVIDIA enabling KMS is enough. There doesn't seem to be any blockers present.

But this is all non-relevant, as the same issues have been plaguing X11 and proprietary NVIDIA since 3.x something. Mutter seems to be having a problem with proprietary NVIDIA, no matter which protocol is being used.
