So, a few weeks ago I upgraded to a bigger ssd on my office laptop and did a fresh install as per usual. Same kernel, same software etc but now my external display connected via HDMI is not working upon login. The odd thing is that if I log out it automagically comes back to life and can then log back in and work with it with no issues, which is extremely annoying to every morning.
I had been using nouveau for a while and the external screen never stopped working but found it caused a lot of flickering and other artifacts so this time I went back to nvidia. I have run nvidia drivers in the past and the experience was pretty miserable with any updates to kernel or drivers breaking the HDMI screen but when it worked everything was good enough for me.
Now, in the past I had the same issue (at least in appearance) but searching through the forums someone suggested to use a plasmashell --replace script at login, which was a nice workaround until an update fixed the issue but this time that doesn't work. I have tried to search for similar issues in the forum but couldn't find anything similar to my issue.
Since I don't really know much about display drivers I'm not sure where to look for clues or what info or logs to post with the topic but I will provide anything that might be needed.
My laptop specs:
OMEN by HP Laptop 15-dc0xxx
Intel i7-8750H
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Mobile
Running:
linux-lts 5.10.47-1
linux-lts-headers 5.10.47-1
nvidia-lts 1:465.31-11
nvidia-settings 465.31-1
nvidia-utils 465.31-1
Plasma 5.22.2
Any help will be greatly appreaciated.
Thanks in advance!

You're running on the intel chip, the nvidia one isn't registered but it's most likely where the output is wired - in which case adding it's modules (and i915) to the initramfs should™ do.
You probably also want drm, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA … de_setting

@seth, adding the modules described in the link you shared plus the i915 you mentioned and then setting a pacman hook to autorun mkinitcpio on driver upgrade as desbribed here https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA#Pacman_hook did the trick and now the external screen works.
Though I don't understand how come in the past all I had to do was just install the nvidia driver and everything worked out of the box or why would the modules not be loaded by default unless I logged out and back in.
In any case, the problem is now fixed and the screen now works without having to do any weird shenanigans.
Thanks a lot!

This is a race condition that afawu was caused by changes to systemd which runs the graphical.target too™ early (and is a reccuring theme since I guess now almost a year).
