Display RAM usage with i3status in GB instead of GiB

I am using i3status to generate a status line for i3bar. Currently my memory usage is displayed in GiB or MiB; I would want to change this to GB and MB. How can I do this?

I was able to changed it for the available disk with

 prefix_type = custom

But it doesn't work for memory. and I get "Error: status_command process exited unexpectedly (exit 1)". I have read the man page of i3status, but there is no mention about how to do this, and I haven't been able to find any question about this online.

This is how my current configuration file looks like:

# i3status configuration file.
# see "man i3status" for documentation.

# It is important that this file is edited as UTF-8.
# The following line should contain a sharp s:
# ß
# If the above line is not correctly displayed, fix your editor first!

general {
        colors = true
        interval = 5
}

order += "battery all"

        format_up = "W: %quality at %essid"
        format_down = "W: down"
}

ethernet _first_ {
        format_up = "E: %speed"
        format_down = "E: down"
}

        format = "%status %percentage"
