Yesterday after rebooting my laptop I found that any time I opened an internet browser or graphically intensive application on my external monitor it would immediately log me out of my desktop environment and kill all running applications.
I can still run terminal emulators, file explorers and the like, but videos, code editors, and browsers when opened on my external monitor immediately log me out. Even if I move an application running on my laptop screen to the second screen it will then log me out.
I thought it might be to do with nvidia drivers and a recent system upgrade, so I tried rolling back the kernel and nvidia drivers to an earlier version but that has not worked.
Any advice would be mightily appreciated.

How about you share some specifics

We had somebody with similar issues in the German forum [1].
Are you by any chance using the proprietary Nvidia driver?
If so, check your journal for XServer crashes and consider using nouveau until Nvidia fixes the issue.

I'm not really sure which specifics would be helpful.
My desktop environment is i3wm.
I was using the latest packages for archlinux-lts and the linux kernel as well as the latest nvidia drivers. I then downgraded them to a set of drivers from a few months ago based on this forum thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=265563 which ended up not doing much.
I am now in the process of trying to revert my packages back to an archived version from a month ago, but considering that downgrading those specific packages didn't make a difference I think it's unlikely to make much of a difference.
What I found strange was that my system started off crashing due to using too much RAM, then when I restarted it the problem began. I'm not sure if that was due to me having run system upgrades before that or if it was due to the crash itself.

Yeah I am using the Nvidia driver. I will give this a try and report back. Thanks!

If using nouveau isn't possible you can also downgrade the xorg-server(-common) packages to 1.20.11

We have this, https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=267824

For now I seem to have solved the problem by temporarily downgrading xorg-server and xorg-server-common to version 1.20.11. Thanks for the help everyone!
