[SOLVED] No hardware acceleration and nomodeset enforced

Hi,

I got this friend's old laptop recently and after wiping out windows I'm having quite some problems with the display.

First the GPU's (Hybrid)

 sudo lspci -v | grep -A1 -e VGA -e 3D
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
	Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Device 124d
--
01:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF117M [GeForce 610M/710M/810M/820M / GT 620M/625M/630M/720M] (rev ff) (prog-if ff)
	!!! Unknown header type 7f

The NVIDIA is actually a :

GeForce 720M
Code : NVD7 (GF117)
For GeForce 400/500/600 series cards [NVCx and NVDx] from around 2010-2011, install the nvidia-390xx-dkms AUR package.

However I disabled it via

# cat /etc/tmpfiles.d/acpi_call.conf
w /proc/acpi/call - - - - \\_SB.PCI0.PEG0.PEGP._OFF

And I have blacklisted as well nuoveau

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | egrep "EE|WW"

What doesn't make any sense is this line from dmesg :

[ 0.043569] You have booted with nomodeset. This means your GPU drivers are DISABLED
[ 0.043571] Unless you actually understand what nomodeset does, you should reboot without enabling it

since :

cat /etc/default/grub | grep GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="loglevel=3 quiet"

Now I actually checked the Command line and it says :

dmesg | grep mode

but as I showed there's no nomodeset on the CMD line...

Re: [SOLVED] No hardware acceleration and nomodeset enforced

/etc/default/grub is one of the inputs for the generation of the real commands grub executes on boot.

the iommu=off & nomodeset may come from another input .
please post the contents of /boot/grub/grub.cfg     (default path) .

Re: [SOLVED] No hardware acceleration and nomodeset enforced

That was it, now it's working after I manually removed the iommu=off and nomodeset from the grub.cfg.
I'm curious tho on what / why it was added by default.

Re: [SOLVED] No hardware acceleration and nomodeset enforced

$ pacman -Qikk grub
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/GRUB#Generate_the_main_configuration_file wrote:

After the installation, the main configuration file /boot/grub/grub.cfg needs to be generated. The generation process can be influenced by a variety of options in /etc/default/grub and scripts in /etc/grub.d/

Verifying the whole content of /etc/default/grub and those of added/ customized scripts in /etc/grub.d  seems like a good idea.
