I had nothing big running, and then suddenly my computer.maxed out RAM, swap and all CPU cores at the same time. The machine became unresponsive and I had to shut it down forcefully. I've also noticed that my machine has been noticeably slower since that happened. Is it a kernel issue, application issue or a hardware issue?

jasonwryan is right: to pin point the exact cause, we need more details.
But the description fits normal symptoms of memory exhaustion caused by a runaway memoy leak in a process. If it recovered, the OOM killer must have kicked in and the remaining slow down is caused by everything having to be reloaded from HDD again.
