No internet after systemd upgrade 248 -> 249

Hi,

After systemd was updated to 249, I stopped getting an IP on my network interfaces (I use systemd-networkd as my network manager). Since then, I was downgrading to 248.3 manually after each update(*), and with it the network is okay. Did anyone else encounter this? Any ideas?

*:

sudo pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/systemd-248.3-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst /var/cache/pacman/pkg/systemd-libs-248.3-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst /var/cache/pacman/pkg/systemd-sysvcompat-248.3-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

I would have a thorough look at the configuration files especially for typos in the variable names

Re: No internet after systemd upgrade 248 -> 249

Post the output of

sudo systemctl status dhcpcd.service

May the update had disabled it.
Also post

sudo systemctl status NetworkManager.service

Check your journal on whether there are errors obvious differences with regards to systemd-networkd between the two versions. Just from the changelog something obbvious I'd check is whether you still have the same interface name: https://github.com/systemd/systemd/blob/v249/NEWS#L107

@Khere: You're assuming OP is using dchpd as versus systemd's built in DHCP client and is using Network Manager.

The output of networkctl status might be interesting.

Re: No internet after systemd upgrade 248 -> 249

Thanks for your replies. Unfortunately, they didn't bring me closer to a solution:

* The configuration files did not change:

$ cat /etc/systemd/network/br0.network
[Match]
Name=br0

[Network]
DHCP=ipv4
$ cat /etc/systemd/network/20-eno1.network
[Match]
Name=eno1

[Network]
DHCP=ipv4

* I don't use NetworkManager, nor dhcpcd:

$ systemctl status dhcpcd.service
○ dhcpcd.service - dhcpcd on all interfaces
     Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/dhcpcd.service; disabled; vendor preset: disabled)
     Active: inactive (dead)
$ systemctl status NetworkManager.service
Unit NetworkManager.service could not be found.

* The output of `systemctl status systemd-networkd.service` looks normal:

● systemd-networkd.service - Network Configuration
     Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/systemd-networkd.service; enabled; vendor preset: enabled)
     Active: active (running) since Thu 2021-07-29 09:53:06 IDT; 1min 10s ago
TriggeredBy: ● systemd-networkd.socket
       Docs: man:systemd-networkd.service(8)
   Main PID: 451 (systemd-network)
     Status: "Processing requests..."
      Tasks: 1 (limit: 19072)
     Memory: 2.8M
        CPU: 27ms
     CGroup: /system.slice/systemd-networkd.service

Jul 29 09:53:08 lb-desktop systemd-networkd[451]: br0: Gained IPv6LL

* The names of the interfaces did not change.
* When the network is working (with systemd 248) the output of `systemctl status systemd-networkd.service` includes just one more line:

Jul 29 10:07:17 lb-desktop systemd-networkd[444]: br0: DHCPv4 address 192.168.90.53/24 via 192.168.90.254

* Running `dhcpcd` manually on br0 does not help.

Re: No internet after systemd upgrade 248 -> 249

Okay, I found the problematic lines in the logs: when there is no network (systemd 249) there are these lines there:

Jul 29 10:25:35 lb-desktop systemd-networkd[438]: eno1: Failed to set master interface: Operation not supported
Jul 29 10:25:35 lb-desktop systemd-networkd[438]: eno1: Failed

I also see now that on rare occasions I do get an IP even with systemd 249, and then these lines do not appear. On systemd 248 I always have network, and these lines never appear.

I should point out that I use OpenVswitch, with the following configuration:

$ sudo ovs-vsctl show
7400290d-588e-4a24-9267-efde42fd4cb1
    Bridge br0
        Port eno1
            Interface eno1
        Port br0
            Interface br0
                type: internal

I found the relevant issue on systemd issue tracker: https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/20241
