[SOLVED] grep /var/log/pacman.log - is my locale wrong?

Strangely enough, I have never observed this before:

$ grep kitty /var/log/pacman.log
grep: /var/log/pacman.log: binary file matches

Sure enough, grep isn't aliased. Indeed, pacman.log seems to contain UTF-8 characters:

$ file /var/log/pacman.log
/var/log/pacman.log: Unicode text, UTF-8 text

However, according to man grep,

Non-text bytes indicate binary data; these are either output bytes that are improperly encoded for the current locale, or null input bytes when the -z option  is not given.

Improperly encoded for the current locale? Doesn't the output from locale look reasonable?
