Xorg freezes with xf86-video-intel uninstalled

This bug was reported numerous times since the beginning of the year, and have been fixed in 5.10.15, but it has started happening on my machine only since about last month.

Screen hangs but cursor, audio and keyboard all working properly. I'm also able to switch ttys. Unfortunately removing xf86-video-intel didn't help. Maybe an important detail is that after issuing reboot command via shortcut, screen un-hangs and I'm able to see a few frames of a valid Xorg state.

I'm running 5.13.5, Intel HD 530, Nvidia GTX960m, optimus-manager is in hybrid mode.
One possible fix from a colleague on opensuse is to set intel_idle.max_cstate=1, but I'd like to use it as a last resort.
