[SOLVED] Among Us - Missing text, menu not working

EDIT 1 The old thread title was Among Us - Cannot play online - ("Online" greyed out), however that was wrong. The real issue is about characters/words in the menu not being visible.

Hi everyone,

I just installed Among Us after I enabling Steam Play (by following this article to the letter, except for Asian fonts) and tried various Proton versions. The best scenario so far is getting to this screen: https://imgur.com/a/EK7HoSm

  • "Online" is still greyed out.

  • If I click on the cog, nothing happens.

  • I (double-)click on "Freeplay", then on one of the 4 map names, nothing happens.

Is there some extra step or option that I missed?

I'd appreciate any help.

I don't think I selected an online region. I can't say more, because I have empty boxes, by which I mean this: https://imgur.com/a/XR7pQbQ
So I don't see anything.
After I click on the globe in the bottom right, I see this: https://imgur.com/a/cDiTwsi

I also managed to click on the red player icon on the left border. Then I clicked on one of the 3 empty boxes, and the window closed. The red player icon now has a yellow frame and does not open up anymore, even after restarting Steam and rebooting my PC.

You have some issue with fonts, the red player icon should say "Account" under it, and there should be text inside boxes.
"Online" button was greyed out because you were not logged in – you need to go to "Account" and either sign in (border will become green) or play as guest (it will become yellow).
I'd focus on fixing the font issue, otherwise it'll be hard to see what you're actually doing when clicking something.

Well, I figured (or "guessed" would be more fitting) as much.
Currently going to hell and back trying to find out what setting I am missing or why these elements in Among Us won't show up. Any hints would be helpful! smile

Some things to try: install the corefonts with winetricks/protontricks and/or force the use of proton 5.13.

  • ttf-ms-win10-auto

  • protontricks

I basically did some T&E-runs and managed to start the game with Proton 5.0-10. All higher versions did not start the game, the little green dude kept running and running. I did not go lower with the version then.

It is much better now.
For example, clicking on the cog opens the settings window.
Upon clicking on the player icon in the upper left, a new window appeared and with text in the text boxes. I clicked on "sign in", however then the picture 1. gained some transparancy, 2. froze and I only kept hearing the normal menu sound. That was that. On to the next problem...

This is a known issue on Proton 5.0 and older. It should not happen on 6.3.

It works now.
Alright, the things I did were:

  • I set DNSSEC to "True" (it was "allow-downgrade" before).

  • Removed "ipv6.disable_ipv6=1" from the boot entry of systemd-boot for my Arch install. Apparently youtube-dl does not have any problems or my internet provider switched something or something with resolv.conf/systemd-resolved got changed ever since this. I cannot say anything more specific.

  • Created a resolv.conf-symlink as described here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Steam/ … nnectivity

  • Rebooted. Multiple times.

  • I set the Proton version to 6.3-5 for both Steam and Among Us.

So this whole topic and range of questions is somewhat solved. But now everything is with MS fonts on all internet sites which I would like to avoid. I hope this is not going to be a 100% correlated issue, i.e. the removal of ttf-ms-win10-auto would lead to Among Us-problems, let alone Steam problems. I like ttf-liberation enough.

You can try to remove that package and simply use protontricks to install the "corefonts" verb into the proton wine prefix used for your game.

It does not start up anymore.

I played it for a good 20 minutes.
Then, for some basic A/B testing, I uninstalled and re-installed ttf-ms-win10-auto and wqy-zenhei each on their own.
I rebooted after each installation process.
I left everything else untouched, but still, it does not reach the main menu anymore, I only see the little green guy running along the screen.

Since Among Us does not start up anymore, I went back to boot with the parameter ipv6.disable_ipv6=1 because browsing and using thunderbird is on normal speed again.

I am out of idea and this fruitless endeavour is rather frustrating. hmm

FWIW about the font issue, I don't have MS fonts installed, and text still renders correctly in the game. I have noto-fonts, ttf-dejavu, and ttf-liberation installed.
Although this is weird overall – required fonts should already be provided in <steamdir>/steamapps/compatdata/945360/pfx/drive_c/windows/Fonts, as symlinks to <steamdir>/steamapps/common/Proton 6.3/dist/share/{fonts,wine/fonts}.

Regarding the game not starting: check the log in <steamdir>/steamapps/compatdata/945360/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/LocalLow/Innersloth/Among Us/Player.log, it might contain information about the issue you're hitting.
In my case it was a bunch of "Curl error 6: Could not resolve host" errors. After I symlinked /etc/resolv.conf to /run/systemd/resolve/stub-resolv.conf those messages are gone, and the game starts correctly.
Also you might want to try with a clean prefix – delete or move <steamdir>/steamapps/compatdata/945360, so that Steam creates a new prefix for the game. (Just keep in mind that your player settings and statistics are stored there, in the same directory as Player.log.)

Even "lsd /etc/" has that link symbol to the left of "resolv.conf". Could I do something more for the whole resolv-topic?

I had done that in the meantime, i.e. ran pacman -Rns steam and renamed ~/.local/share/Steam and ~/.steam and the re-installed the whole program and then re-downloaded the game.

The log shows exactly the same errors I had, so I think it confirms the issue is with resolver configuration.

I don't have resolvconf.conf at all; do you have openresolv installed? Maybe it's somehow conflicting with systemd-resolved?
My network configuration is very basic: systemd-networkd with DHCP enabled on eth interface + systemd-resolved without any additional configuration options. I don't have dhcpcd, openresolv, etc. installed.

Oh.
Wow. Yeah I actually had openresolv installed. And netctl. But I had not enabled any netctl service, let alone did I find anything via  "systemctl list-unit-files | grep open".
Now I have them removed.

I use wpa_supplicant and dhcpcd to connect to my wifi, and any other wifi.

Hm. For the life of my I cannot recall when and why I installed either openresolv or netctl. Suppose it was through a dependency.
And up until the issue for this very thread I had not really run into similar problems.

And then again, for the last 3 years I have been using

sudo wpa_supplicant -B -i wlp61s0 -c MY-WLAN.conf && sudo dhcpcd wlp61s0 

and it works flawlessly. Can't find it on the wiki anymore though.

But I know, this all gets a bit off-topic now. smile Really glad to mark the thread as solved! big_smile
