After alsamixer update, can't read ASCII because background is white

I can't read any of the ASCII in alsamixer after updating it, because now it apparently uses the terminal background color (mine is white) as the background color (hence yellow text is unreadable and text is just generally a pain in the ass to read). How do I force alsamixer to use a black background again? Thanks.

According to the ALSA mailing list this seems currently impossible.

As an workaround you could set yellow as another color in your terminal (you would loose the semantics of yellow though).
Maybe an orangey yellow like #ffcc00 would suffice.
