Switching sound output

Hello everybody,
I've got a soundcard which is integrated into my mainboard. Sound works good using hda-intel module with alsa.
My problem is :
I've got 2 outputs connected to the mainboard : One 5.1 on the back of my tower and an other one with only one jack on the front. I'd like the sound to switch off of the back output when I plug my headset in the front, and then reswitch on as soom as i've removed the jack on the front.
At the moment I can't even find how to configure alsa to be able to do it manually (I mean, I didn't find the way to mute the 5.1 without muting the front output)

Does anybody have an idea about how I could solve this problem ?

Thanks a lot

Re: Switching sound output

I am not sure, but i think that this plugs can be setup with:
- alsamixer
- gnome-alsamixer
- kmix

Re: Switching sound output

Hi,
Perhaps but how ? Because the only thing I've been able to do with alsamixer is to change the sound of the output ... And the problem is that the front jack and the front canal of 5.1 output looks like beeing considered as the same by alsa  :?

Re: Switching sound output

then maybe the the sound card is not 100% compatible with linux.

i would try kmix, because it is much more easy to understand than alsamixer.

If no luck anyway, jump to google and check the compatibility of your soundcard.

maybe here:

Re: Switching sound output

I don't have any experience with a setup like that, so unfortunately I can't offer the kind of solution you are looking for. However, couldn't you just lower the speaker volume, or turn them off altogether?

Re: Switching sound output

Hi :=)
Of course I could (and it's what I do at the moment actually) But it's not very confortable and it's possible to do it on Windows ... So I'm trying to get it fixed on Linux big_smile

Years later - same story!
I've exactly the same setup. Doesn't work either. Do you have a solution now?

Pulseaudio smile

I don't know, if there is support for automatic switching of the output when a headphone set is pluged in, but you can use pavucontrol or, if you use KDE 4.6, the phonon settings KCM to change the sound output manually.

Hope this helps!

Ack - please don't revive old threads. Just post a new one.
