{solved} No sound with audio players

Hello everyone,

I have no sound with several music players (Clementine, RhythmBox, Cantata).
However with Audacious and VLC it's all good!

Here is what I did for Cantata:
I first loaded mpd and wildmidi.

[armand@Desktop-living ~]$ nano ~/.config/mpd/mpd.conf
music_directory         "~/music"
playlist_directory       "~/.mpd/playlists"
db_file                       "~/.mpd/database"
log_file                       "syslog"
pid_file                       "~/.mpd/pid"
state_file                    "~/.mpd/state"
sticker_file                  "~/.mpd/sticker.sql"
input {
       plugin "curl"
}
audio_output {
       type            "alsa"
       name            "My ALSA Device"
}
[armand@Desktop-living ~]$ systemctl status mpd
○ mpd.service - Music Player Daemon
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/mpd.service; disabled; vendor preset: disabled)
    Active: inactive (dead)
      Docs: man:mpd(1)
            man:mpd.conf(5)
[armand@Desktop-living ~]$

Then I started the daemon (mpd) with tty:

[armand@Desktop-living ~]$ systemctl start mpd
[armand@Desktop-living ~]$
[armand@Desktop-living ~]$ systemctl status mpd
● mpd.service - Music Player Daemon

By checking the status of mpd several things call out to me:Aug 12 19:16:47 Desktop-living mpd [2996]: exception: Decoder plugin 'wildmidi' is unavailable: configuration file does not exist: /etc/timidity/timidity.cfg

Aug 12 19:16:47 Desktop-living mpd [2996]: exception: Decoder plugin 'wildmidi' is unavailable: configuration file does not exist: /etc/timidity/timidity.cfg
What is this missing configuration file? I didn't see anywhere that I had to create one.

output: No 'audio_output' defined in config file
Which config file is this? In mpd.conf I have defined an audio_output.

When launching cantata with tty I got the same error message regarding wildmidi:

You've edited the user mpd config files yet you're trying to start it as a system (not user) service.

Read the wiki page...

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

Re: {solved} No sound with audio players

And you should configure the pulse rather than the alsa backend if you're using pulse.

By adding this in ~/.config/mpd/mpd.conf ?

audio_output {
        type            "pulse"
        name            "pulse audio"
}

For the first point, sorry I'm a newbie on Arch!
But I changed the layout.

To launch from a terminal as a user service is it sufficient?

armand@Desktop-living ~]$ mpd #

thanks in advance

Re: {solved} No sound with audio players

For example. But if you want it autostarted when you login you can do

systemctl --user enable mpd

which will logically bind to your normal user.

Re: {solved} No sound with audio players

I still have the same problem - no sound.
And I think this error message has something to do with it. And I don't know how to get out of it ...

Re: {solved} No sound with audio players

The wildmidi message is irrelevant (unless you actually want to play midi files, but that would be something relatively special). Define "no sound" are you playing to the correct device? Is mpd started? What's your output for

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
ps -ef | grep mpd
systemctl --user status mpd
pacmd list-sinks
pacmd list-sink-inputs

Re: {solved} No sound with audio players

Mpd is started twice for some reason, but your real problem is

volume: front-left: 65536 / 100% / 0.00 dB,   front-right: 65536 / 100% / 0.00 dB
                balance 0.00
        muted: yes
pacmd set-sink-input-mute 1 off

Double check the index or look at pavucontrol or whatever mixer utility you usually use.

Re: {solved} No sound with audio players

Hi,

muted: yes: well seen! And thank you for the command that cancels the mute.
So cantata works now and out of curiosity I reinstalled clementine and it's all good.

Once again thank you V1del for your help. I really appreciate!
