Symbol lookup error in mate-panel: matemenu_tree_load_sync

After upgrading the whole system, I always have to downgrade the package "mate-panel" to 1.20.5, as I it refuses to start. When I start it manually by command mate-panel, I get the following error message:

mate-panel: symbol lookup error: mate-panel: undefined symbol: matemenu_tree_load_sync

1.22, 1.24, 1.26 version number packages give the same error message.
