It seems that I've figured out what is causing the problem with my resolution. Apparently the latest fglrx drivers (8.30.3) don't seem to pickup custom modelines configured in xorg.conf. Is it possible to download older drivers that do take in modelines from the Arch repository or would I have to remake the package?
Thank you
Rob

big chance you still have the package in your cache:
pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ati-fglrx-utils-8.29.6-3.pkg.tar.gz
pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ati-fglrx-8.29.6-2.pkg.tar.gz
I also added ignorpkg for ati-fglrx to /etc/pacman.conf
IgnorePkg = ati-fglrx
IgnorePkg = ati-fglrx-utils

O help, upgrading to kernel 2.6.19 is a bit of a problem. You have to rebuild the ati drivers as they are made for the 2.6.18 kernel. But trying to do so gives this error:

Yes - i have same trouble with ati-fglrx 8.31.5-2 and kernel26 2.6.19-3

I just found there was already a patch for this problem in the arch cvs repository for fglrx and kernel 2.6.19. It is working using that patch.
You can find a precompiled version here:

Anyone know if there are any 8.24.8 packages built for the 2.6.19 kernel? My card is an ATI Xpress 200m with sideport memory. I've tried the 8.29 drivers and they work, to the extent of which ati drivers could ever work All I get with them is a badly garbled screen and a completely unusable desktop (which is what I get when I use any driver version newer then 8.24.8 ), but glxinfo says yes to direct rendering. The only drivers I have found to work with my card (direct 3D rendering) without garbling are the 8.24.8 release, And I can only manage to get them working on Kubuntu 6.06 w kernel 2.6.15 and Xorg 7.0. So if anyone knows where to get an 8.24.8 package built for 2.6.19 or has any information about how to build the module, It'd be much appreciated and a great stress reliever for me until I can sell this piece of crap ATI infected laptop (HP Pavilion dv5215us) and get one with a nice nVidia card in it

I dont know whats the matter, but i have a similar trouble:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … dering+ati
I remember i had direct rendering running perfectly on ubuntu edyeft, but y changed tu arch because i dont like the ubuntu speed (too slow distro).
Since i changed tu arch i have no video rendering.
I have ATI radeon express 200 on a compaq v2000

Just to update, The 8.32.5 drivers AMD just released seem to be working ALOT better, Even sideport memory (dedivated video mem) is working and 3D performance seems to be better. I have only tested these drivers on kubuntu (2.6.15, Xorg 7.0), but will test them on Arch later today and will post my findings.....

They also doesn't seem to work with modelines, the same problem as the other releases. I'm back using 8.29

Modeline still doesn't work with the new drivers, and it isn't in their 'known issues' list.
I sent the Linux ATI team some feedback about this issue. If you also want to send feedback to them, you can do so here.

I did not know there was a separate feedback form for the linux crew. I already used the normal support form to report this issue...

Does anyone know which modes fglrx currently does support? I'm thinking of upgrading my age-old CRT to a LCD. On my current monitor the only resolution available above 1024x768 with fglrx was 1280x1024 @ 60Hz (= eye-cancer), pretty much forcing me to use the open source driver to get 1280x960 @ 72Hz, which is a lot more comfortable.
The LCD I'm looking at goes up to 1280x1024 @ 75Hz though, so if fglrx has support for this mode that would keep my driver options open.

Normally the supported resolutions are given to the computer by the monitor trough DPMS. It reports which resolutions it support and that are the ones you're able to select.
Unfortunately there seems to be a bug in the fgrlx drivers which make them interpret the refresh rates badly sometimes.
But as you can set your monitor on a lot more resolutions than the DPMS reports, this is where modelines come in handy, to force these resolutions to be possible.
But now back the the LCD story: an LCD does not have the problem of flickering as an CRT has. As far as I know (I'm not using LCD) almost every LCD runs at 60Hz, but you don't see any flickering.
btw: I'm not 100% sure of this whole story, so there can be a slight mistake somewhere

A little googling shows you are correct, the slight flickering I have noticed on some LCDs must be due to other issues then. Rather than investigating this to the bone, I guess my best bet is to ask for a demo in the store and see for myself.
Thanks for the info!

ATI still hasn't resolved nor confirmed this issue.
