[SOLVED] Fresh steam install, games running extreamly slow!

I just installed Arch, I3, Nvidia drivers, Lutris and Steam. One game I play by lutris (Vanilla World of Warcraft) seems to run perfectly, but steam games are not working that well. Games seems to launch normally, but very slow and the games are running extremely slow! I wonder where I should start the troubleshooting, could it be missing steam libraries, configurations or maybe related to nvidia drivers?

Re: [SOLVED] Fresh steam install, games running extreamly slow!

As you're barely providing any useful information for us to try and troubleshoot things, I'll let you do some reading on your own and see if you're able to solve the problem.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Steam
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA

If you're still having trouble, then come back with more information about your setup, and preferrably also things you've done to try and solve the problem.

I followed these wiki guides originally, lets see if I did everything right and didn't accidentally skip anything essential. I redid some steps to show you how I progressed.

Re: [SOLVED] Fresh steam install, games running extreamly slow!

Depends, which games? Steam Play? If so, Proton version?

If you're on a laptop there's a chance Steam might be running things off integrated GPU instead of using your nvidia card like you would expect.

If you can confirm that the nvidia card is being used, there's a chance dxvk might not be used as it should. You can check by adding "DXVK_HUD=1 %command%" to a game's launch options in your Steam library. You'll get an on-screen display in the corner of the screen showing GPU + driver version, and framerate. If you don't get that, then dxvk is (perhaps incorrectly) not being used, in favor of the much slower wined3d (?).

With such a relatively old nvidia card I'll assume you have a roughly equivalent processor, failing everything it's possible that your hardware is simply not powerful enough to run the games that you're trying to run. No way to tell, because you haven't told us. Keep in mind that running games through Proton has a performance penalty compared to Windows, even with dxvk. Depending on the game you might only be able to get about ~90% of the performance you would get on Windows, which is good enough when your hardware can handle running games on higher framerates anyway, but might be a bit unforgiving for lower-end hardware.

Re: [SOLVED] Fresh steam install, games running extreamly slow!

I'm using PC, instead of laptop. And I'm playing native linux games on steam which have worked perfectly before with same setup on ubuntu and manjaro. I did install proton aswell, but haven't really needed or used it.

Re: [SOLVED] Fresh steam install, games running extreamly slow!

Please edit #3 and wrap the shell interaction in "code" tags, https://bbs.archlinux.org/help.php#bbcode

As for your problem, please post your xorg log and the output of "glxinfo -B"

enabling DRM kernel mode setting, which I did some reading on, but wasn't guide sure if that applied to me, so I skipped it.

There's a chance that w/ your static xorg.conf (remove that, it's typically not needed) you enforce the nvidia driver, but because the GPU isn't actually ready at this point, the rule that extends the modulepath doesn't match and you end up w/ GLX through the software rasterizer… (the requested output will tell)
So, no: this is a bad approach. Remove the generated xorg.conf, add the kernel parameters and also the modules to the initramfs (esp. if you're autostarting the graphical.target, since system just plows through - GPU ready or not…)

Re: [SOLVED] Fresh steam install, games running extreamly slow!

Okey! I still need more time to study what initramfs modules are and how to do changes there, but here is what I have done this far. I'm taking it quite slow to avoid breaking anything and trying to understand every step as well as I can in given time. Lets see what happens after boot now.

Re: [SOLVED] Fresh steam install, games running extreamly slow!

Ouh, my graphics are broken now. I see many vertical lines on my screen and bad resolution. I think I need to work from CLI to fix this. Not excatly sure what to do. Boot from arch installation media and do the chroot thing? I have only done that during installation, not sure how it works now in this situation. Looking it up is quite difficult with phone. I'd be greatful for quick tips for now.

Toldyaso…

I still need more time to study what initramfs modules are and how to do changes there

Yup, because that's the most likely reason now.

You can also delay the start of the X11 server as interim mitigation.

Edit: you can most likely just boot the multi-user.target (ie. the console), see 2nd link below
Or just switch to a different TTY (eg. ctrl+alt+f3)

Re: [SOLVED] Fresh steam install, games running extreamly slow!

Ctrl+alt+f3 gave me a blank screen where I couldn't do anything, but I booted into grub, pressed 'e' and removed the added  "nvidia-drm.modeset=1" text for this boot. Then I regenerated xorg.conf with nvidia-xconfig just for now, because I need GUI for this evening and I'm running out of time for today to fix this all the way. I'll get back to it soon and I'll let you know how it goes when done.

Re: [SOLVED] Fresh steam install, games running extreamly slow!

I added the parameters

[shadowbird@arch-i3 ~]$ head /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
# vim:set ft=sh
# MODULES
# The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
# run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
# in this array. For instance:
#     MODULES=(piix ide_disk reiserfs)
MODULES=(nvidia nvidia_modeset nvidia_uvm nvidia_drm)

# BINARIES
# This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
[shadowbird@arch-i3 ~]$

Then I made directory for the hook file and created the file

[shadowbird@arch-i3 ~]$ sudo mkdir /etc/pacman.d/hooks
[shadowbird@arch-i3 ~]$ cat /etc/pacman.d/hooks/nvidia.hook
[Trigger]
Operation=Install
Operation=Upgrade
Operation=Remove
Type=Package
Target=nvidia
Target=linux
# Change the linux part above and in the Exec line if a different kernel is used

[Action]
Description=Update Nvidia module in initcpio
Depends=mkinitcpio
When=PostTransaction
NeedsTargets
Exec=/bin/sh -c 'while read -r trg; do case $trg in linux) exit 0; esac; done; /usr/bin/mkinitcpio -P'
[shadowbird@arch-i3 ~]$

Now I'm a bit unsure if anything els needs to be done with the hook? I wonder if it should be listen with mkinitcpio -L command or do I need to (activate changes somehow first)?

[shadowbird@arch-i3 ~]$ mkinitcpio -L
==> Available hooks
autodetect	consolefont	fsck lvm2 modconf sd-shutdown	strip
base dmraid hostdata	mdadm¹ resume sd-vconsole	systemd
block encrypt keyboard	mdadm_udev	sd-encrypt	shutdown	udev
btrfs filesystems	keymap memdisk sd-lvm2²	sleep usr

¹ This hook is deprecated in favor of 'mdadm_udev'
² This hook is deprecated in favor of 'lvm2'
[shadowbird@arch-i3 ~]$

And I removed the xorg.conf file again

[shadowbird@arch-i3 ~]$ sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
[sudo] password for shadowbird:
[shadowbird@arch-i3 ~]$

Now before I boot, I'd like to have confirmation that everything should look good and I didn't miss anything important.

Re: [SOLVED] Fresh steam install, games running extreamly slow!

Looks fine, though you didn't mention running an initial

mkinitcpio -P

which you want to do for the initramfs to actually include the modules you've added now.

I see, thx!

[shadowbird@arch-i3 ~]$ sudo mkinitcpio -P

[shadowbird@arch-i3 ~]$

so, should be safe to boot now or should I be concerned about the warnings about the missing firmware?

No, the warnings are harmless.
