[SOLVED] xhci_hcd 0000:05:00.0: ERROR unknown event type 15

I have a fresh installation of Arch and have been hammering thru various issues.

The latest one results in losing USB devices.

[ 2029.701549] xhci_hcd 0000:05:00.0: ERROR unknown event type 15
[ 2034.706459] xhci_hcd 0000:05:00.0: xHCI host not responding to stop endpoint command.
[ 2034.706462] xhci_hcd 0000:05:00.0: USBSTS:
[ 2034.706485] xhci_hcd 0000:05:00.0: xHCI host controller not responding, assume dead
[ 2034.707419] xhci_hcd 0000:05:00.0: HC died; cleaning up
[ 2034.708424] usb 5-1: USB disconnect, device number 2
[ 2034.708425] usb 5-1.3: USB disconnect, device number 4
[ 2034.708426] usb 5-1.3.1: USB disconnect, device number 5
[ 2034.708521] usb 6-1: USB disconnect, device number 2
[ 2034.708523] usb 6-1.1: USB disconnect, device number 3
[ 2034.708902] usb 5-1.3.2: USB disconnect, device number 6
[ 2034.709228] usb 5-1.3.3: USB disconnect, device number 7
[ 2034.709614] usb 5-1.3.5: USB disconnect, device number 8
[ 2034.709917] usb 5-2: USB disconnect, device number 3

It looks a lot like this: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 4#p1985574 but I wanted to verify that I need to downgrade my kernel.  Seems drastic for a fresh install.

Any advice?

Doesn't matter how fresh your install is if you have a finicky renesas USB controller. If you follow the other posts in that thread you should be able to fix it on a current kernel though.

Thanks V1del, I started digging into it and it just makes me nervous finding the "right" .img file for that specific device "somewhere" as described in the thread. Much of the discussion revolves around a USB Expansion card containing that controller.  Mine is integrated into the ASUS Maximus CODE motherboard and the thought of cratering the controller firmware without really knowing what I'm doing just seemed risky and permanent.    For the time being, shifting my actively used devices to lower ordered ports seems to have allowed me to function without seeing the kernel error (fingers crossed).

It's been stable for over 24 hours so I'm hopeful, but if it starts cratering again I guess I'll start searching for that img file.

The firmware people are talking about is in the AUR, but yes it is a bit of an unfortunate situation with this particular USB controller

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/ke … e19e7635a3 which should land with 4.14 should allow you to use the latest kernel and have the controller functional provided it does not need the firmware or has the firmware already available loaded from flash memory.
