Gnome volume control not working

Running gnome-volume-control gives me this:

Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed.

alsamixer gives this:

No mixer elems found

The thing is, all sound works fine. I have a usb audio device (m-audio), and I can control the sound volume in any application, still my gnome volume control gives me a red cross and an error.

Re: Gnome volume control not working

Are you starting Gnome via GDM? This sounds like some kind of dbus or hal initialization issue.

Re: Gnome volume control not working

Yes I do use gdm. I load dbus and hal at startup but even before I added them I had the same problem.
