Unable to use installed bitmap fonts

Heyo. Been having issues trying to get installed bitmap fonts to work in applications.

I have installed the cherry font (https://github.com/turquoise-hexagon/cherry) to

/usr/local/share/fonts/

as described in the manual installation section of the fonts wiki page and regenerating the font-cache by using

fc-cache -fv

I have also ensured that all font files in the folder have chmod 444 and the font directory itself has chmod 555 as described in the wiki page. None of these fonts appear in any application I try to use them in even after restarting them. Logging out and back in seems to have no effect either. I have tried installing a bitmap font from the AUR, but those do not appear in any application for use either.

In other distributions I am familiar with having to enable bitmap fonts by removing the 70-no-bitmaps.conf file in /etc/fonts/conf.d, but Arch doesn't seem to have this file, so I assume they are enabled off the bat.

My fonts do appear in the fc-list. Running fc-list | grep bdf returns

/usr/local/share/fonts/cherry-12-r.bdf: cherry:style=Regular
/usr/local/share/fonts/cherry-10-r.bdf: cherry:style=Regular
/usr/local/share/fonts/cherry-13-r.bdf: cherry:style=Regular
/usr/local/share/fonts/cherry-11-r.bdf: cherry:style=Regular
/usr/local/share/fonts/cherry-11-b.bdf: cherry:style=Bold
/usr/local/share/fonts/cherry-10-b.bdf: cherry:style=Bold
/usr/local/share/fonts/cherry-13-b.bdf: cherry:style=Bold
/usr/local/share/fonts/cherry-12-b.bdf: cherry:style=Bold

so they are present. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Unable to use installed bitmap fonts

Is BDF even supported by your app (whatever it is) anymore? It's a legacy format.

I would convert the files to OTB with https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/fonttosfnt/. Those should work everywhere, e.g. Gnome Terminal.

I went ahead and gave that tool a try and converted the bdf files to otb. They do seem to work now. Thank you very much.

Or you could simply have installed the existing AUR package (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/cherry-font-git/) which they prominently link to from their GitHub repo and which does this automatically...
