base install?

which one to i want to download, the base iso or the 500mb one. is the base install like debian net install?

yeah, it doesnt contain packages. You are forced to install packages via another cd, or over the internet.

i just tried the base install, and all went fine untill i was done and rebooted, and got a kernel panic.

Actually, no.  The "base" iso installs a base linux system (from that CD) with everything you need (usually) in order to update / install further packages through pacman, making your system what you want it to be.  The "ftp" option installs the same system, just updated to the latest versions in the repo (although, if I remember right, you can install more than the base system through the ftp option, but it's not recommended).

The message at kernel panic would help in troubleshooting your difficulty.

It usually denotes that either grub or lilo parameters are incorrect in the boot build of the install.

See the wiki for the correct kernel.img to include in grub or lilo.

Otherwise, post the kernel panic message you receive to aid in further troubleshooting.

Im sure u downloaded the base iso and installed, right?

During the installation process you have to change in grub your menu entry. Change the line "initrdxx.img" to "kernel26.img" Thats it.

You can do this in grub temprarily to hv arch booted. But u need to change afterwards. Press "e" in grub and edit the entry...

This seems to be the current state of affairs with netinst, i. e. happened to me too. Just boot the "fallback" kernel and once you are up and running either rebuild the kernel images with mkinitcpio or "reinstall" the kernel with pacman.

FYI, some newer ISO's are avaliable and, AFAIK, they have mkinitcpio support:
