no sound

:? I've just about finished installing Arch on a Dell inspiron c640 laptop. I have the java runtime environment , flash-plugin and mplayer installed and running well.
I followed the alsa setup in the wiki to get sound working and it's silent as a graveyard. Hwd says there is no sound card. I used alsaconfig to find and install it.  I checked the files recommended checking in the wiki and everything seems ok. I tried to play a music cd and was told I didn't have permission to access the cd. I did add my user id to group add - sound.  I also added all modules to modules and daemon in rc.conf. Anybody know what's going on?
I wonder if my sound card is bad? The only other difference is I always  used KDE, this time i'm using Gnome. This is my favorite distro so I would like  to get it working, any ideas??? -- thanks - larry

Re: no sound

Did you remember to log out and log back in after adding your user to the audio group? Did you run alsamixer to configure the volumes and unmute everything?
