Does any1 have experience regarding the subject?
I would like to use my windows machine with my linux one as a renderfarm, mainly in 3dsmax but would be interested to hear about other alternatives also.
So has anyone got 3dsmax working and if not what would be my best bet to get network rendering to work?

Well, all I know is that Backburner doesn't run on linux (maybe the new version, but I don't think so). I know Autodesk is looking forward supporting linux (especially since they own Alias|Wavefront) but not until some years.
VRay plans to release a standalone linux server soon, it could be the thing you're looking for (especially if you're a VRay user - I am).
Else... Maybe you should try renderman, dunno if there's a binding for 3DSMax though...
I don't know about others alternatives but I would be interested to know more about it if you find interesting informations ![]()

Well this seems to be somewhat a grey area, ie hard to find alot of info ^^
So far i've learned that:
-I could use Maya, both win and linux versions available
-play around with wine and vmware
-That there are lots of various linux renderers like mentalray
-That there are lots of network render "engines" for linux like spider
So it's either emulate, switch program or export from max to different format then render that file on some other prog...
Well guess it's lots of trial and error ahead ![]()
Any other input on the subject would be apreciated here also ![]()

Excellent software but I never succeed at running it under Arch because of a RPM unpack weirdness...

3dsmax won't run with wine, and will be painfully slow with VMWare. But I never tried Backburner... It could work... Perhaps.

Yep, the problem is to find one that can be integrated in Max with a standalone rendering server (i.e.: not using backburner). That's why you should keep an eye on VRay (awesome renderer, even if you're not using GI) ![]()
Oh, about Maya, since Maya 8 and Max 9 releases, it's really easy to import/export scenes from one to the other (with animation, simply use a PointCache2 in Max before exporting and you're all done !).
