Maybe stupid Question?

Can you down load any source file and compile it under 64 bit os and it will work providing dependencies are all there?

A lot of the time this will work, but not always. 

I have been doing this to get wireless cards to work on different computers.  I have run into a few problems, but there are almost always alternates available without having to know how to dig into the code. 

Check out the AUR package builds and you can see typical things that need to be done when compiling.  It might help if you run into problems.
