Mic stops working after a while

When I'm on an audio call with screen sharing on apps like Zoom, Slack, Teams, Discord, Hangouts, etc, after a while my mic stops working. Screen sharing is working fine, I can hear audio, just that others can't hear me.

Below are a dmesg log from around the time this happened:

Oct 19 22:57:53 foo kernel: platform regulatory.0: Direct firmware load for regulatory.db failed with error -2

The last line of the log seems to indicate a network error though I didn't notice this during the call as I continue to hear the audio and seemed like I was in the call throughout. I'm using alsa for my audio. I'm not using a VPN during the calls.

Below is the log from journalctl:

Could be due to something like load on the system causing the mic to stop working and/or wifi to disconnect intermittently?

Re: Mic stops working after a while

That journal looks filtered with -k at the minimum and the other snippet is early in the boot process and should be irrelevant for what happens "later" when you actually are using things (... alsactl restoration errors on boot can be normal and aren't inherently cause for concern).

Post an unfiltered

sudo journalctl -b

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/List_o … n_services as well as

arecord -l
sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*

during reproduction of the issue. For a potential cause it's possible that during screen sharing the relevant tool tries to open a secondary listening channel to the mic which will break on plain ALSA if dsnoop isn't configured, but that's just a hypothesis here.

@V1del, here is the unfiltered jounalctl log. It took some time to get a call setup to reproduce the issue:

I didn't manage to get an output for `fuser -v /dev/snd/*`. I will try to capture it again. I think the issue happened somtime between 9:40 to 1025. It happened twice. I saw an error message from discord when it happened that said "unable to detect audio output device, if you have fancy audio device that automatically disconnects..." something along those lines asking me to allow audio device to let discord continue to use it. When I disconned discord, refresh page and reconnect, the audio works fine for a while. Each time it happens, subsequent occurrence feel progressively sooner than the last.

Re: Mic stops working after a while

I'm assuming there's a timing problem with closing the existing audio stream and reopening it properly with the screen share. Using pipewire/pulse would/should make this fairly seamless. Alternatively use a dsnoop mic but that should be the default if you don't have any custom ALSA config, what's

arecord -L

?

Re: Mic stops working after a while

V1del, thanks for information regarding pipewire and pulse. I will look into them. During an audio call, audio streams open and close? I didn't know this. Could you also let me know some resources I can use to learn this a bit more in depth please?

The output of arecord -L is

null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
