[SOLVED] About the new nvidia-495 driver and Kepler GPU support

So, I've seen the new nvidia driver landed on the repos, and I've also seen said driver drops support for Kepler GPUs.
That does include my GPU, a GT710, and although there are older drivers on the AUR, like nvidia-440, nvidia-470 is currently not available.

So, should I put nvidia and my kernel on IgnorePkg in pacman.conf and wait for 470 to land on the AUR or should I downgrade to 440?

I would go 440 until 470 branch package is made available.

Edit: it has been reported here: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/72549?p … ing=nvidia

470 landed on the AUR as predicted, although I had to do some conflict managment while replacing the drivers;

No big deal, everything is working, but I recommend others to pay attention to what pacman tells you during the whole process.

Re: [SOLVED] About the new nvidia-495 driver and Kepler GPU support

It was unpleasant to unexpectedly lose GUI after regular update and spent time to rollback to 470. Was there any announcement about requirement of manual intervention?
BTW, nVidia didn't define 470.xx as legacy, it's "Production Branch Version", and 495.xx is "New Feature Branch Version". Wasn't removing 470.xx from official repository too hasty?

It is worse than that, because for me Xorg just crashed with nouveau without any hint. Thanks for this thread, you saved my life, now GUI is working again. It was not something like removing unsupported 470.xx, it was replacing supported production branch by new feature branch without any warning. I am really upset.

Re: [SOLVED] About the new nvidia-495 driver and Kepler GPU support

Which is completely normal, Arch has always tracked the feature branch, and the maintainer has mentioned in the past that it's a big hassle to maintain multiple branches which is why 390xx got dropped way back when this happened there, so that this happened here is from that standpoint unsurprising. But I also don't really know why there are no announcments, unless the maintainer wasn't aware, which isn't hard to not be, it's not made entirely obvious just from looking at the changelog: https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverR … spx/181503 unless you actively check the supported products page and actively notice a previously present GPU series not being there, it's not entirely trivial to notice that Kepler got dropped.

I'm happy to sponsor people wanting to maintain the drivers in [community]. I don't want to maintain the 470xx drivers as I don't run them and that means I'd rather have someone maintain them in AUR than packaging untested drivers. If someone wants to officially test and package these (or even older drivers) I'm all for that.
