[SOLVED] Can't detect DisplayPort monitor over USB-C

Hi there,

I'm really struggling to get any progress here. I bought a completely brand new monitor Dell U2720Q. It's branded as USB-C monitor. It came with its own USB-C-C cable, which we then tested in the office and it works fully with colleague's laptop and monitor running Windows. I can't get it to work though, as xrandr doesn't detect it at all. There is the embedded eDP1, which is the laptop display. Then there's DP1, HDMI1, HDMI2, and VIRTUAL1, all of which are shown disconnected. The laptop gets charged through the USB-C port through the monitor, and it also works as USB hub, since my mouse is connected to the monitor. So the USB cable works for both power and data. I checked BIOS settings and there's only Thunderbolt security settings. I tried all except "DsplayPort only" and none helped (and my assumption is that DisplayPort would be enabled in all of them). The laptop is TUXEDO InfinityBook Pro 14 v5 (https://www.tuxedocomputers.com/en/Linu … v5.tuxedo#). The description clearly states that the single USB-C supports DisplayPort. Running lspci I get multiple lines of Thunderbolt 3 bridge (Titan ridge 2C 2018). So I'm pretty sure my hardware does support DP through USB-C. I also ran pacman -Syu and rebooted multiple times. I have no Xorg config related to displays. Xorg log doesn't show any errors when plugging in the cable; it actually doesn't print anything when the mouse isn't plugged into the monitor.

I googled whatever I thought of and tried multiple things (even rotating the USB cable 180 degrees!) and obviously nothing helped. Here's what we know:
1) the cable works
2) the monitor works both through USB-C with colleague's laptop and through HDMI on my laptop
3) the USB-C port on my laptop works as it draws power to charge the laptop and also connects the USB hub in the monitor
4) the laptop hardware *should* support DP over USB-C as lspci and manufacturer's description suggest
5) no errors are reported in neither Xorg log nor dmesg.

Again, I couldn't find anything in BIOS related to DP over USB-C, generally almost every feature is enabled and the rest is unrelated. Linux kernel us up-to-date, version "5.14.15-zen1-1-zen" as reported by uname. I don't know where else to look. I'm not hyped about plugging in both USB-C and separate DP or HDMI cable to get USB hub and charging + actual display.

Any ideas?

Thanks and cheers.

I almost accidentally stumbled upon the solution by myself. All I needed to do was to set DDI to "DDI to TBT" in BIOS. From then on it immediately worked. Source: https://www.tuxedocomputers.com/en/Info … ion.tuxedo
