Getting backspace to work properly with aterm

I've been using aterm for a while now but recently backspace has started playing up when ssh'ing to other boxes.

On some backspace on the command line acts as delete on others it works fine.

On some backspace will work on on the command line but then in vim it will act as delete, on those I also notice things like End not working properly either. I had a similar problem a while ago where backspace would issue a ^? command which I could convert to proper backspace by using stty erase ^? . Is it possible to fix this one in a similar way?

Can someone explain what is going on?
