Which root directory would benefit the most from a SSD?

My laptop has a primary HDD disk with a separate 30GB SSD. It's currently unused. My question is, can I install a root directory, for example /var/, to the SSD and the rest to the HDD? And if possible, which directory would benefit the most from the SSD's speed?

30GB is plenty for the entire root partition.  Just keep /home/ on the HDD and everything else should be able to be on the SSD.
