Wifi card can't see home network

I put an old wifi card in my pc as I moved it to a room to far from the router to use a wired connection. The wifi card can see all the neighbor's routers but not my own. All other devices in the house can connect to the home network. Also I created a wifi hotspot on my phone and was able to connect to that from the PC. When I first put the card in it worked for the first evening and into the next morning. Sometime in the morning it quit working and could only see the neighbor's routers. I'm not sure if I can just paste the journal entries here.

Starts at the 1st boot after I installed the wifi card and the 2nd boot was after it stopped working. I tried another card now and smae thing. Also Mint and Manjaro on the same box with the same problem.
All other devices in the house can see the router. I beleive that the neighbor's routers that it sees are the same router. Home hub 3000.

Re: Wifi card can't see home network

"a room too far from the router" … "it worked for the first evening and into the next morning"
Does it work™ if you move the system closer to the router?

Disable NM and post the results of "iw scan", https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Networ … ireless#iw as well as the output of "lspci"

It is not far from the router. the Atheros device listed is the 2nd card I've tried with the same result. Manjaro and Mint
are on the same box with the same issue and all other devices in the house can see it. Srangest, most annoying problem.
I thought somehow the router may have been blocking it but a factory reset of the router didn't help.
My home network is called borgcube.
On the output of iw scan I don't see borgcube but I do see this...
SSID: \x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00
Seems odd to me but I don't know.

Really?
Wired connections are good for 100m, that's more than you'll get from an obstructed WiFi network.

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

Re: Wifi card can't see home network

I'm thinking about using a cable but it will be a nightmare to route it through the vents to get upstairs.

Re: Wifi card can't see home network

The found APs are all 2.4GHz and the AR9485 doesn't support 5GHz - are you sure the borgcube provides 2.4GHz (alone or dual channel)?
What was the other card you tested?

The posted scan result doesn't show anything like "SSID: \x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00"

Re: Wifi card can't see home network

That ssid I posted was from a 2nd time that I ran that command. I do have dual band on the router. I tried shutting off 5ghz at some point but then nothing would connect.
That computer is on the top floor with a smart TV directly under. Could that be interfering.

Physical distance might be irrelevant - I doubt the smarttv will do anything, but you probably don't know what in the floor is and I've been in enough location where the radio would not cross from one floor into another (and I mean: not at all, no way, not even at illegal signal strengths…)

Re: Wifi card can't see home network

I'm thinking that the router is faulty and the 2.4 ghz band doesn't work. I plugged an old dlink into the homehub 3000 and I can connect through that.

Re: Wifi card can't see home network

Maybe you are using a higher channel like 12 or 13 that your old wifi card cannot use or you have configured the wrong region?

Sometime in the morning it quit working and could only see the neighbor's routers. I'm not sure if I can just paste the journal entries here.

Maybe you have your AP set to automatically choose the channel and it changed at that time?
