[SOLVED]Failed to start LightDM

Hello! I am pretty new to Arch and decided to run lightdm with xorg. After a reboot the message "[FAILED] Failed to start Light Display Manager." shows up without any further information.

I have no clue why this suddenly started happening so I require some help. Here my lightdm debug log:

Sounds like the early loading failure when KMS is not ready quick enough: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … _KMS_start

So what would you suggest?

Re: [SOLVED]Failed to start LightDM

Follow the direction in that link. If you want to stay on nouveau add nouveau to the relevant modules line and rebuild your initramfs and try to boot.

You might in general also consider switching to the nvidia driver, but from the message so far this shouldn't be the inherent cause, especially if it used to work

Re: [SOLVED]Failed to start LightDM

@OP: In my opinion, LightDM can be problematic and really isn't worth the eye candy. I would just boot into the command line and run startx to start your desktop. I assume that's what you were doing prior to installing LightDM. On the other hand, if you're sharing the computer(s) with other users who might be confused booting into the command line, then I can see the desire for something like LightDM.

Re: [SOLVED]Failed to start LightDM

Ok so I made some progress:

After reboot the [FAILURE] message is still the same but with the following commands I was able to run it:

sudo modprobe nouveau
sudo lightdm

Seems like I have to start nouveau each time on my own which brings me back here.

Unfortunately doing this doesn't make it work:

/etc/mkinitcpio.conf:
MODULES=(nouveau)

I was never able to get the nvidia driver running so switching is not really an option.

I did this and lightdm just waited for several minutes so I knew somehow nouveau just didn't start at all. So I had a look at the modprobe configs and indeed in /usr/lib/modprobe.d/nvidia-utils.conf nouveau was blacklisted. I surely didn't write that on my own so since this error occured after doing pacman -Syu maybe I still had the nvidia driver installed (from my attempts to makenit running) and maybe it wrote that file(?).

Pretty hard to tell because I rarely shut down my computer...

Anyways I thank you all for the nice help!

Re: [SOLVED]Failed to start LightDM

modprobe -c | grep nouveau

ninja pre-confirmed…

Please always remember to mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.
