Hello,
I like the "Liberation Mono" font and would like to use it. Since I would like emojis, icons and other symbols to work both on the CLI, in Xorg apps and i3bar, I am trying to use the "nerd font" version.
So i installed nerd-fonts-liberation-mono from AUR.
Below are the files included in the package. 2 things stand out here:
1) the font is renamed to "Literation Mono" (due to a licensing issue)
2) the package does not deploy any files in /usr/share/fontconfig/conf.avail or /usr/share/fontconfig/conf.default -- according to fontconfig wiki page "presets" go here. It's not clear to me as a user where I'm responsible to write config files there, or whether that's the package's job. In fact I have a bunch of different packages installed, and it seems pretty random: some packages install files there, others don't (see other code section below). Curiously the Font package guidelines also don't seem to mention this.

It also shows up in the font-manager GUI application

I think I have just figured out that I should use 'LiterationMono Nerd Font' or 'LiterationMono Nerd Font Mono' (which one is better?), however i'm still not able to get the italic or bold variant if I do this:
~ ❯❯❯ fc-match 'LiterationMono Nerd Font'
Literation Mono Nerd Font Complete.ttf: "LiterationMono Nerd Font" "Book"
~ ❯❯❯ fc-match 'LiterationMono Nerd Font Mono'
Literation Mono Nerd Font Complete Mono.ttf: "LiterationMono Nerd Font Mono" "Book"
~ ❯❯❯ fc-match 'LiterationMono Nerd Font Italic'
Verdana.TTF: "Verdana" "Regular"
~ ❯❯❯ fc-match 'LiterationMono Nerd Font Mono Italic'
Verdana.TTF: "Verdana" "Regular"
~ ❯❯❯ fc-match 'LiterationMono Nerd Font Bold'
Verdana.TTF: "Verdana" "Regular"
~ ❯❯❯ fc-match 'LiterationMono Nerd Font Mono Bold'
Verdana.TTF: "Verdana" "Regular"

I now have configured the font correctly in the kitty terminal, I think, using:
font_family LiterationMono Nerd Font Monothis seems to use the proper font whether in italic, bold, underline, or "standard". However i'm still failing to show emoji symbols. The below code block, while rendering fine in my browser, doesn't render in the shell and also not in vim inside the shell.
if !s.Exists {
return "❌"
}
if s.HasChildren {
return "?"
}
return "?"< Daenyth> and he works prolifically

seems nerdfonts don't contain emoji, that seems to explain my remaining issue.

I think I fixed that issue as well... Turns out that in font-manager when you unmark fonts (i was doing so when deciding which main font to use), it actually adds them to a file .config/fontconfig/conf.d/78-Reject.conf and that prevents their usage. Once I cleared out that file, emoji's magically appeared in the CLI, in vim and in the browser.. although I think something might be going wrong when submitting into the bbs. ❌ ??

probably bbs doesn't properly submit the emoji: https://emojipedia.org/leaf-fluttering-in-wind/ ? - it shows up fine when writing the message. can somebody with a certainly-working-emoji-setup confirm?

?
Works for me. No special nerd fonts installed ![]()
# edit: so the BBS won't print it. It works fine in the text box, but as soon as I hit submit, it's gone.
