[SOLVED] HP laptop keyboard (de_CH-latin1) issues

Since I switched to Linux, first manjaro, then Arch, I've had two major issues with my keyboard:

  • The f3 and f4 keys toggle the microphone mute (same as f8) instead of changing the laptop display brightness. I do remember them working ONCE one day ago, but never after that. The other function keys work as intended.

  • I would like the various accents (´, `, ^, ~, ¨) to wait until I press a vocal before printing out, and making that vocal accented, like they did on windows (and also on manjaro I think, I'm not sure). To make things clear, this is what the de_CH keyboard looks like

I'm using an HP ProBook 440 G6, and the BIOS is fully up to date (01.18.00 Rev.A).

In case any of you have experienced the exact same problems, and maybe found a fix, or have any idea, let me know below!

setkxbmap -print -query

The basic swissgerman layout has

    key <AE11> { [ apostrophe,   question,   dead_acute             ] };
    key <AE12> { [ dead_circumflex, dead_grave, dead_tilde          ] };

so your desired behavior is the default for that layout.

This is unrelated to the brightness keys. What does 

sudo libinput debug-events

report for brightness and mute keys?

You're using the "de_nodeadkeys" which only purpose is to defeat the behaviour you desire.
Simply use the basic ch layout (no variant, the "de" variant  is equivalent)

As for your brightness keys, we need to look a layer below 

sudo evtest

If they're also the same there, it probably hangs on some wmi kernel module/parameter - but https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=333181 ended w/ a BIOS update.

Try to blackist hp_wmi - use the kernel command line editor of your bootloader (eg. grub) - so if this goes wrong, a simple reboot will clear the stage (nb. that I don't *expect* any issues from this, but safe > sorry)

"module_blacklist=hp_wmi" doesn't show up in the juornal grep - how did you add it to the commandline and if it was /etc/defaults/grub, did you grub-mkconfig afterwards?
If this can really not prevent the module from being loaded you'll have to go for the /bin/true variant explained in the wiki, but atm. it looks more like the parameter wasn't applied at all.

After trying, I only had one boot with something different, but it might also have been a kde bug (latte-dock didnt load, and the wallpaper had reset to default)
The journal and hotkeys still gave the same output, so idk.
I might try tomorrow to try with /etc/default/grub, I will let you know (it's basically midnight right now). also, merry xmas

WRT your DM, I was kinda waiting for the progress report on this. Notice that findigs on different HW are pretty much useless because this is very much vendor dependent and even different generations of the same notebook model might not show the same behavior.

SOLUTION:
I tried to update the BIOS via the windows utility, and it did not work
Apparently, rolling back to the previous version (01.17.00) from the bios, and then updating, still from there, to the newer one (01.18.00) fixed it?

A weird thing i noticed while updating though is that while updating PEIA the fan goes crazy and the computer shuts down, probably for termal related issues, at 90%

I tried to keep the computer as cool as possible, and it got a bit further, but still shut down

I might try later, if i get some issues, or with the next stable BIOS.

Anyway, I think we can consider the issue fixed
