hope this is the place to post this!
I have tried putting xscreensaver in my daemon list in rc.conf.
I have put xscreensaver -no-splash & in my ~/.xinitrc before wm starts.
but, I have to manually start the daemon. So, obviously I'm doing something wrong. Could someone point out how to have the daemon start automatically?
I'm currently using kde 3.5.5 - all packages are current.
Also, I do not have screensavers enabled in KDE.
Thanks,
McRae

Eh, why? I've never touched anything xscreensaver, it just works (in KDE and Xfce).

I want to use xscreensaver, not kde's screensaver.

You could put a file called xscreensaver.desktop in ~/.kde/Autostart with following content:
[Desktop Entry]
Exec=xscreensaver -no-splash &
Name=XScreenSaver
Type=Application
X-KDE-StartupNotify=false
Remember to chmod +x it.

I always thought KDE integrated XScreenSaver??

KDE uses kscreensaver, which provides different "themes" and generally is a separate thing.

thank you.
I did as you said but upon restart I receive this message:
no Type= specified.
I rechecked my file and this is what I have:
Exec=xscreensaver -no-splash &
Name=XScreenSaver
Type=Application
X-KDE-StartupNotify=false
To chmod it I simply run as root #chmod +x /home/user/.kde/Autostart/xscreensaver.desktop right?
Thanks for your patience,
McRae

Yes, that's how you chmod it.
It should work. I even checked whether it works here and it indeed does ;-)
Play with it a bit. Instead of restarting KDE, just open .kde/Autostart in konqueror and click on the xscreensaver file. Then check whether xscreensaver is running or not (e.g. with ps).

Okay, thanks. Now that I think of it I'm even missing a few config options from the xscreensaver dialog...

strange.
Here is the file:
Exec=xscreensaver -no-splash &
Name=XScreenSaver
Type=Application
X-KDE-StartupNotify=false
yet kde insist that this file has no Type=...entry?
Don't want to make you sorry you've helped me but any thoughts on this error?
thanks again,

Run 'desktop-file-validate' on it for more hints.

[mcrae@blackbox ~]$ desktop-file-validate /home/ mcrae/.kde/Autostart/xscreensaver.desktop
/home/mcrae/.kde/Autostart/xscreensaver.desktop: error: file doesn't contain a "Desktop Entry" s ection
This is the output? I'm sure the answer is right here but I'm not sure what to do with the output... :oops:

Ah. Have you omitted "[Desktop Entry]" on top?

Thanks lucke,
If I can't get it to go from here I'll just use the kscreensaver. It's strange though. I had xscreensaver before I reinstalled Arch day before yesterday (shrug) who knows....
thanks again for your time,
McRae
