[Solved] k3b/growisofs problem, can't burn DVDs

Hey,

I've been trying to burn a DVD and I just can't. I've run the k3bsetup tool and added a burning group as well as put my user in it, logged out and in again. When trying to burn in k3b it halts at this error (which repeats until I kill it):

k3b: (growisofs) :-! "COMMAND SEQUENCE ERROR"@LBA=0h. Is media being read?
k3b: (growisofs) :-! the LUN appears to be stuck at 0h, retrying in 5 secs...

I tried both burning the files to the disc as is and generating ISO-image first (generated by k3b).

Version info:

$ pacman -Qi k3b
Name           : k3b
Version        : 0.12.17-2

$ pacman -Qi dvd+rw-tools
Name           : dvd+rw-tools
Version        : 7.0-1

$ pacman -Qi cdrtools
Name           : cdrtools
Version        : 2.01.01a07-1

$ pacman -Qi cdrdao
Name           : cdrdao
Version        : 1.2.2-1

(I'm running on Arch64, but I was unsure whether this should be put in the Arch64 forums or not. I hope I put it right.)

EDIT: I've now tried downgrading dvd+rw-tools to 6.1, 6.0, 5.21.4.10.8 and the same problem persists, goign to try downgrade k3b now.

EDIT2: I've tried downgrading k3b to 0.12.16, 0.12.15, 0.12.14 and still no go. Compiling 0.12.2 atm, if that doesn't work I'll try something pre-0.12.

EDIT3: Neither 0.12.2 nor 0.11.24 would build, I guess some of their dependancies are too high in version or something similiar. Still stuck with not being able to burn DVDs though. :-/

What hdparm is saying about your burner's DMA status?

hdparm -d /dev/dvd

(or whatever node your DVD drive is using)

Re: [Solved] k3b/growisofs problem, can't burn DVDs

# hdparm -d /dev/dvd

/dev/dvd:
using_dma    =  1 (on)

I could use my 32-bit Debian chroot (old install) and test it, since k3b was working fine then. But I don't know how to set the chroot up so it can access the drive, I've tried 'mount --bind' it but that doesn't work.

This is a new error to me, I am able to burn in arch64.  I had trouble with k3b until I set the buffer size, you might try that as a long shot.

Options -> 'advanced' tab -> mark the 'manual writing buffer size'  Set it to something higher (mine is 16MB)

You could also try as root to see if there is a permissions problem.

Re: [Solved] k3b/growisofs problem, can't burn DVDs

Unfortunally that didn't help, I also tried removing .kde to get rid of all old settings but I still get the same error message.

EDIT: I just booted up Debian and tried to burn the disc there but got the same error, I'm starting to think the reason is becuase the drive doesn't like the brand. I'm going to go look for a newer firmware for my burner and flash it to see if that'll help or not.

EDIT2: Flashing the drive didn't help, and the disc is compatible with my drive, can format it just fine, just not burn it. :-/

EDIT3: After forcing a full format the disc works! I should have tried this earlier.. and I should have mentioned it was a -RW disc too.
