xpdf -open error

xpdf can run as a server when we use the -open flag:
xpdf -open

it works ... sometimes (especially after a reboot) and what i open with xpdf goes to that same document as per manpage:
-open [PDF-file]
This option sets up a default remote server.  If Xpdf is already
running (with the "-open" switch), the  PDF  file  (if  any)  is
opened  in  a new tab.  If Xpdf (with the "-open" switch) is not
already running, starts Xpdf and opens the PDF  file  (if  any).
This  is  useful for GUI desktop environments, e.g., the typical
double-click on a PDF file case.

however, sometimes i get this error:

I/O Error: Couldn't set up the remote server socket

i haven't been able to establish a pattern as to when it does work and doesn't.

journalctl gives:

Jan 08 20:54:05 schnell systemd[650]: Started VTE child process 7361 launched b>
Jan 08 20:54:05 schnell gsd-media-keys[7355]: # Theme parsing error: gtk.css:9:>
Jan 08 20:54:05 schnell gsd-media-keys[7355]: # Theme parsing error: gtk.css:5:>
Jan 08 20:54:05 schnell systemd[650]: Started Application launched by gsd-media>
J

i get the theme parsing error whenever i open any pdf with xpdf (possibly because it is using an outdated gtk library?).

ps aux | grep xpdf and grep socket
give nothing

and i couldn't find anything using google relating to this.

ideas?

also, is it possible to run something like evince or any program as a server somehow?

======
new info

If you use the default remote server via `xpdf -open`, relative paths are henceforth interpreted as relative to where the -open command was issued initially.
This means that if you change the directory and try to open a new file using a relative path (regardless of whether '-open' is given as argument), opening the pdf will fail.

this might explain why it starts to work, but then doesn't.
